Niamh's Fund

Hello, thank you for visiting our page.

Niamh was our beautiful 9 year old daughter.

On November 13th 2014 she died following nearly 3 years of treatment for Wilms Tumour, a cancer of the kidney which had spread despite very intensive treatment.

She was a bright, caring little girl who loved all animals, especially dogs.

She particularly wanted to help other children with cancer and I hope you can continue to support our fundraising as we endeavour to find a cure for relapsed Wilms Tumour (usually a more rare and aggressive type of the disease).

Childhood cancer is rare but when it strikes your family it becomes your whole world. Your world changes in an instant.

Often the symptoms are invisible and diagnosis made by chance after a fall or a bug.

Nearly three years ago, on Friday 13th January 2012, we took Niamh to the GP as she seemed a bit bloated and had intermittent tummy pain. Within an hour we were in the local children's hospital. Her diagnosis was Wilms Tumour. She had a large tumour coming from the left kidney and the disease had spread to her lungs.

We had begun what became a relentless journey.

She endured 100 weeks of chemotherapy, 3 major operations, a stem cell transplant, and radiotherapy. Despite all this, Niamh faced the challenges before her with immense courage and a maturity beyond her years. She amazed everyone with her brave, strong spirit, cheeky sense of humour and sunny smile. The nurses and doctors often remarked on how well she coped.

Earlier this year we had the devastating news that the cancer had returned and once again our world was turned upside down.

Niamh accepted all she went through with such grace, but cancer stole much of the last 2½ years of her life. She missed out on school, dance classes, Brownies and swimming, family holidays and parties. It's time we get one step ahead of this disease and stop this happening to any other children.

We set up Niamh's Fund to enable us to access treatment that was not available on the NHS. Thanks to the wonderful support we have had, we were able to access treatment that enhanced and extended Niamh's life. This meant that she was able to enjoy her 9th birthday with her twin brother and all our family.

Now, we also want to support the work of Bethany's Wish, the only Wilms tumour charity in the UK. Wilms Tumour is a rare childhood cancer, affecting about 70 children a year in the UK. Any funds raised by Niamh's fund  will now go specifically to fund desperately needed research into relapsed Wilms tumour cases.

Please give what you can to help. Every penny will make a real difference.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
