Kirkwood, the Hospice for Kirklees, cares for local people who face life-threatening illness, for example cancer, late stage heart failure or severe lung disease. The Hospice provides 16 in-patient beds, day care services in the hospice’s Support & Therapy Centre, including a drop-in service at the hospice every Friday and bereavement services in the Family Care Centre, which includes care & support for bereaved children. There is also a team of three palliative care specialist nurses, who provide advice and support in patients’ own homes and an education centre providing palliative care education and training.
Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Over half of all cancer research in the UK is carried out by our scientists. We have discovered new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer that together have saved millions of lives across the world. We have been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival rates double in the last thirty years. But one in three of us will still get cancer at some point in our lives. Our groundbreaking work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people will survive.

Sharpster – New to the team having never ridden a road bicycle until May this year. I am gradually swapping my motorcross gear for lycra and looking forward to the challenge – Honest !!
We aim to raise as much money as possible for our designated charities by cycling from the Port of Calais to the Port of Bilbao a total of 814 miles in 8 days.
Here is little about the team and the rides we have done in the past.
Please visit our website at www.port2port.org.uk for more information.
Formed by accident following too much to drink one night at Hartshead Social Club in 2002 the first ride was more of a bet than a pre-planned event.
The plan was to cycle the well known Lands End to John O’ Groats route of 875 miles in 10 days with a bunch of people who hadn’t ridden bikes since they were kids. The idea snowballed and before we knew it we had the route planned, a backup van and driver employed and all the accommodation booked. We have to say special thanks to all the local businesses and residents who helped us with this ride. Next step was to choose a charity to raise money for and make all the suffering worthwhile, Cancer research and the local Kirkwood Hospice good causes were chosen. Despite a lack of training and preparation all member of the team made it to John O’ Groats and a total of £6500.00 was raised for the charities.
Having got the bug a new ride was planned in 2003 and the Two Towers route from Paris to Blackpool was born, one week to cycle the 570 miles between the two towers. Again we had sponsorship to help with the backup van and travel and some new members joined the Helmets on their second ride to help raise £8500.00 for Cancer charities.
In 2004 we planned the third ride and chose a challenging route from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. An 800 mile journey through France, Switzerland and Italy, taking in one of the .
highest roads in the Alps the Grand St Bernard pass at 2400m. Again the object was to raise money for good causes, this year Reubens and Kirkwood Hospice were the designated charities. Fantastic support was again the main reason we were able to raise a total of over £10 000.
After six years of being idle we are now planning another ride which we have named Port to Port. The idea is to cycle the 814 miles from Calais in Northern France to the Port of Bilbao in Northern Spain. This time we have a group of 18 riders many who are new recruits who are as we speak training hard to attain the levels of fitness required to complete the latest adventure. Everything is in place including transport, accommodation, ferries and a backup vehicle, all we need to do now is raise loads of money which will be split 50:50 between Kirkwood Hospice and Cancer Research.
All donations are much appreciated and make all the effort worth while.
