Charity
The Meningitis Trust is the UK’s longest established meningitis charity. It helps around 20,000 people each year through its range of specialist services; giving vital support to those who have been affected by this life-changing disease. With as many as 500,000 people living in the UK who have had either viral or bacterial meningitis and up to one adult in every four knowing someone who has had meningitis, the charity’s ongoing work is much-needed. The charity is committed to raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and distributes millions of leaflets, posters, symptoms cards, information sheets and other materials every year. Paul Robbins's fundraising page
Hi, thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
I'm running the London Marathon in April 2011 to raise money for the Meningitis Trust. This is a great cause and many of you will be aware of my son Oscar's experience with this dangerous condition. We were lucky, it was only because of our awareness of some of the symptoms that we were able to act quickly.
Watch the video on the right to find out more about why I'm doing this (click on the You Tube logo to play it larger!)
By sponsoring me you will be helping the Meningitis Trust in their work to spread awareness of the disease as well as caring for people and the families affected by it.
Thank you!
Final Update : 20th April
Well guys I did it, I completed the London Marathon! It was a truly amazing experience and one I will never forget. The support from the crowd was truly incredible, they cheer each runner like they are a world champion! My finishing time was 5:54, a bit slower than I had hoped but my old injury flared up at mile 18 so the last few miles were a real struggle. I'd like to thank all you you who have sponsored me, its looks like together the Meningitis Trust will have raised around £200,000 from the event, thank you, thank youm thank you! So whats next? Well I've been hit by the running bug so I will definately keep running, and maybe do a half marathoon later in the year....maybe one day I'll run the London Marathon again, I feel like I have some unfinished business there!
Training Update 12th April
5 days to go! Today will be my penultimate run, just a short one, then another short one on Thursday and that will be it. I am so excited about the big day but also very nervous. I'm not looking for a specific time but less than 5hrs would be great. Thank you to everyone that has sponsored me, your generosity is humbling and is the best motivation to help me finish the race. See you on the other side!
Training Update 23rd March
Had physio today and he's given me the go-ahead to try for 20 miles on Sunday, if I can acheive that then I'm back on track. Just over 3 weeks to go and I'm nervous!
Training Update 17th March
Well the injury is healing and I've started running again, I hope to be back up to about 12 miles this weekend, then I've got to try and run a 20 mile run before I start the 'taper' to the race - just over 4 weeks to go now and I have my race number 42834 - yikes! Its getting close!
Training Update 9th March
Oh dear, I have picked up an injury, torn calf muscle, it means I wont be running the Norwich Half Marathon this weekend which is disappointing but I should be OK for the big one - fingers crossed for a smooth recovery!
Training Update 4th March:
Been working hard on threashold running (thats short sprints and rests) and long runs at the weekend - I've got my first ever race next week, the Norwich City Half Marathon, that will hopefully help me fix my target marathon time. Only six weeks to go now and the butterflies have started.
