Charities

British Heart Foundation
The British Heart Foundation is the nation's heart charity. Every day they save lives, through pioneering research, providing vital information to help people reduce their own heart health risks, campaigning for change and supporting and caring for heart patients. Charity Registration No 225971
Julia's House
Julia's House is Dorset's only hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions. The majority of the children we care for are unlikely to live beyond the age of 18. Complementing the work of the Julia's House Community Team, which consists of 70 Nurses and Carers who travel the county, the children's hospice provides life-changing support for families both in their own homes and in the hospice itself. In 2008, the charity provided more than 12,000 hours of care for Dorset's children. Receiving approximately three per cent of our funding from the Government, Julia's House relies on the Dorset community to help raise the remainder of our required income. In 2010, we estimate that it will cost £2.6m to continue to provide our vital services.

Pupils from Beaucroft Foundation School, a special needs school for 150 children aged between 4 and 19 with complex needs are cycling the distance between Lands End and John O’Groats to raise money for Julia’s House and the British Heart Foundation.

Their teacher Duncan Russell is undertaking the actual cycle this summer also to raise money for the two charities, so the pupils are going to replicate the journey using mainly the 4 X-Dream Trixter bike simulators, they had installed last year to aid their individual fitness. Even the staff, including the site manager, office and kitchen staff and of course the teaching and support staff will put feet to the pedals and join in. The younger pupils will use their trikes and scooters as their feet don’t reach the pedals on the bigger bikes!!!

At Beaucroft we are fortunate to receive donations for much needed equipment throughout the year, so we feel that it is only fair that we put in the miles to raise money for other very deserving causes.

The sponsored cycle will take place in the week commencing 27th June and the pupils and staff are hoping to cycle the 1407km over the 5 days.

Our aim is to raise in the region of £4000 which will be split between Julia’s House and the British Heart Foundation.

Hi, I am Duncan and I live in Colehill and also work there too at Beaucroft. I really fancied a challenge like this and want to support the two charities. For Julia's House (a local children's hospice) we are aiming to raise £2000 which will pay for them alll to have a Christmas party together with all their family at the end of this year. Thnk you so much for supporting us. It is really appreciated. big love, duncan xx

and I'm Pete!

My brother and I have been talking of this challenge for a number of years and now it is finally here...and in true Russell fashion, it's by the seat of our pants! Both charities are amazing and will put the very kind donations to great use. Please make this incredible challenge easier (my bum is going to kill!) by donating whatever you can afford. Cheers, Pete xx
