Charities
Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Over half of all cancer research in the UK is carried out by our scientists. We have discovered new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer that together have saved millions of lives across the world. We have been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival rates double in the last thirty years. But one in three of us will still get cancer at some point in our lives. Our groundbreaking work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people will survive.
Mind has been speaking out for better mental health for 60 years and is the leading mental health charity in England and Wales. At Mind, we work for a better life for everyone with experience of mental or emotional distress.

Pol's 10K
Hello Lovely People!
So, I'm running the Bupa 10K for 2 wonderful charities - Mind and Cancer Research UK. If you'd like your sponsorship money to go only to Cancer Research UK, or for more info on their work, I also have a fundraising page (which I'd already set up - sorry for the confusion!) at http://www.runningsponsorme.org/pollypenter
The reason I've decided to run for Cancer Research UK is that one of my friends from school, Will Scott (the handsome chap in the picture), died in November after a brave battle with cancer. Will was a seriously great bloke and part of a group of lovely guys who took me under their wing at school, let me hang around with them and humoured me for what was the best year of my life. He was funny, charming, daring (I won't elaborate, but Millfield people will know what I mean!) and also super-fit, and may well have raised eyebrows at the thought of me running 10K, since at school I was noted for WATCHING rather than playing football, singing, writing and other such sedentary actvities.
Cancer Research UK is a fantastic charity as they conduct research and work in areas of cancer treatment, prevention and care.
I'm also running for Mind because it's a great charity which provides support, advice and information for hundreds of thousands of people, as well as campaigning on mental health issues. I've had personal experience of mental health difficulties and have phoned the Mind helpline - they're great and they deserve support!
I'd really appreciate any more you can give, but also any support you can offer. I'm running along with Lovely Helen and Lovely Nicky - the route is laid out on the side of this webpage so if you'd like to come and cheer us on that would be great! As for the training, well at the moment I'm up to 8K, and Helen is even making me run up hills, so we're getting there slowly but surely.
Thank you thank you thank you so much for your support!
Love and hugs
Pol x

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it is a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.
"Why, what's the matter?"
"Nothing, Pooh Bear, nothing. We can't all, and some of us don't. That's all there is to it."
"Can't all what?" said Pooh, rubbing his nose.
"Gaiety. Song-and-dance. Here we go round the mulberry bush."
