Charities

Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund
Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is the only charity exclusively funding research into pancreatic cancer in institutions throughout the UK. Pancreatic cancer has a 3% survival rate. While the survival rates for many cancers have improved over the last forty years, the rate for pancreatic cancer has not changed. Lack of research and research funding has been a major factor. Pancreatic cancer is the 5th most common cause of cancer death, but receives only 1% of UK cancer research funding. Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is a new charity dedicated to defeating the disease by supporting and promoting cutting edge research into early detection and new teatments.
Bloodwise formerly known as Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research
We are the UKs biggest blood cancer charity. We are here to beat blood cancer. We stop people dying from blood cancer, we make patients lives better and we stop people getting blood cancer in the first place. We research. We help. We campaign. We share learning. We raise money. We have changed the world for people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders, but we won’t stop until every single person with blood cancer survives and can live their life to the full.

November 4th 2015

Today we are off to commence our final fundraising challenge - a Himalayan Trek to the home of the Dalai Lama!

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last 18months and enabled us to embark on what promises to be a great adventure. You have pampered, baked, paddled and funked and for that we salute you!

We'll be updating this page with photos as we go so do please follow along.

Polly and Tessa

PS.  Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research have changed their name to Bloodwise - same charity same need for funding.

Please help us fund the research that can save more lives.

Tessa and I are committed to raising  £8000 for two cancer research charities - Leukaemia + Lymphoma Research  and Pancreatic Cancer Research.  Over the next  18 months we’ll be taking on a  number of fundraising challenges culminating in a hike through the heart of the world’s highest mountain range, the  Himalayas, in November 2015.

Why? Well like so many people, our lives have been changed forever by cancer. Just before Christmas 2012 I was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 47.

I consider myself one of the lucky ones as survival rates for breast  cancer have increased dramatically in recent years thanks mainly to the large amount of funds spent on research. Too many others are not so fortunate as cancer has many othe less well understood forms. Tessa’s Dad Bernie (aged 62) and my father in law David (aged  70) both died from pancreatic cancer  - survival rates for which are still just 3%, a figure that has not improved in over 40 years. My Dad Pete died  from Leukaemia (aged 70). No clinical trials were available for those over 65 due to the lack of funding.

There is a huge amount of optimism in the cancer research community about the potential for progress but ongoing investment in research is vital. Our chosen charities - Leukaemia + Lymphoma Research  and Pancreatic Cancer Research - will not stop until cancer is beaten.  They will win; it’s only a matter of time. But they cannot do it on their own. And that is where we all come in. By making a contribution to our fundraising campaign you’ll be helping scientists achieve the breakthroughs that are desperately needed.

Our ultimate challenge is a Himalayan Trek. We leave for on 04/11/2015 for  Delhi where we transfer by train to Dharamsala the centre of the Tibetan community since the 1950s and home to the Dalai Lama.  From there we will trek on mountain trails for 5 days for 6-8 hours a day at high altitude sleeping in two man tents. It is not for the faint hearted and we will need to have trained hard to be fit enough to complete the trek. The  expedition is designed to create employment, contribute to the local economy and inject funds into vital community projects in one of the poorest parts of the world.

But we won’t even be getting on the plane without your help.  The trek is fully authorised by our chosen charities but we need to raise the cost of the trek (approx £1200), plus a minimum donation -100% of which is kept by our charities. Our target is to raise £8000.

We need you to join us and we want you to have fun whilst you do it. Our key fundraising events include the following:

Ladies Pamper Evening - 3rd July 2014Newick Barn Centre

Artwave Cream Teas in the Orchard – Upper Lodge 24 August 2014

Dragon Boat Racing - Bewl Water 13 September 2014

Online Designer Lampshade Auction - November 2015

Valentine’s Ball  - 14 February 2015, Newick Village Hall

If  you have just a few hours to spend in helping us make any of the above a success please do get in touch.

Making a donation is easy. Please visit our fundraising page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PollyAndTessaHimalayanHike. Virgin Money Giving is a 100% not-for-profit and they will collect Gift Aid on behalf of both our charities so if you are a UK tax payer PLEASE do remember to tick the GiftAid box.  Whatever we raise will be split 50/50 between Leukaemia + Lymphoma Research  and Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Thank you so much.
