Children Heard and Seen
An estimated 200,000 children age under 18 are separated by parental imprisonment and on any given day. This figure is two-and-a-half times more than the number of children in care and six times the number of children on the child protection register. Children Heard and Seen, is a charity that works to mitigate the effects of parental imprisonment on children, young people and their families. We aim to provide quality services for children with a family member in prison. These children have done nothing wrong. It’s not their fault their parent is in prison. Please support us to ensure they don’t suffer as a consequence of their parent’s mistakes!

Hi,

Many thanks for visiting this page, which allows you to help the charity 'Children Heard and Seen' provide essential support to the children of UK prisoners. Statistically, those children have poor life chances - for example, 65% of boys go on to offend. With your help we can change that.

This fundraising event involves my participation in two multi-day endurance events, namely:

  1. The 18th Off-Track Skiing World Championships, held in Lapland in February 2015, and
  2. The 30th Marathon des Sables, held in the Sahara Desert in April 2015.

Both events have a reputation. Participants in the Skiing World Championships frequently end up with frostbite, and the Marathon des Sables is commonly known as "the toughest footrace on earth". The total distance covered will be approximately 186 miles (300 km). However, from my perspective, the main challenge is dealing with the 100 degree temperature shift (from -40C to +60C) that these events demand.

This website is operated by Virgin Money Giving, which is a not-for-profit organistion designed to quickly process donations to Children Heard and Seen. It also aranges gift aid (tax relief) where appropriate.

Please donate something to help Children Heard and Seen do what they do. Many thanks for your support.

You can monitor my progress in the 2015 Off-Track Skiing World Championships and the Marathon des Sables via the organisers websites at http://tinyurl.com/p37clx8 and http://tinyurl.com/nwm4mg5

UPDATE (10/2/2015): With the ski event now completed, additional details are coming online, such as a good timelapse video at http://youtu.be/c35vukUw-9A (I am in the blue jacket with number 110 on my head). More detailed satellite tracking data is also available via http://tinyurl.com/omaxha3

UPDATE (31/3/2015): With the Marathon des Sables due to start within days, full details are available at at http://tinyurl.com/p7qg8bp (this includes hilariously grim accounts by previous competitors, and details on how to email me at the event). Additionally, BBC Radio Oxford has released an interview where I highlight the importance of the charity 'Children Heard and Seen' - see http://tinyurl.com/o8j3zvf (I feature around 9 minutes in).

UPDATE (14/4/2015): With the Marathon des Sables now completed, a great deal of information has become available online. For example, confirmation of my place (319th out of 1330 participants, i.e. within the top 25%) is available at http://tinyurl.com/mwjs8s5 and videos of each day are at http://tinyurl.com/qzyqedc . This was my first attempt at both a marathon and ultra-marathon - my feet are in a bit of a state but they should settle down in a few weeks.
