ShelterBox
ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that specializes in emergency shelter. We help thousands of disaster affected families every year by sending ShelterBoxes. Although the contents of our large green ShelterBoxes will vary depending on the type of disaster we are responding to and where in the world they are being sent, they will generally include a specially designed disaster relief tent, a stove, a kitchen set, water purification equipment, blankets, a toolkit and more. A ShelterBox will provide an extended family of up to 10 people with shelter, warmth and dignity for approximately 6 months. Every donation that we receive will help us provide shelter, warmth and dignity to families across the world who have lost everything due to disaster.

Update: A massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored me! I managed to complete the run in 5 hours and 46 minutes and I carried the box for the entire duration, I'm now hobbling around, cannot manage stairs and my back is very sore! So thank you for all your support and thank you to all of the masses who cheered me on, I couldn't have done it without you!

In an attempt to raise money for the Cornish based disaster relief charity 'ShelterBox', I will be running the 2012 London Marathon with an unladen ShelterBox strapped to my back.

It's madness I know, my knees and back may never forgive me, but the work that 'ShelterBox' does makes it completely worthwhile.

My training is going well and on schedule, I have started training with the box strapped to me which attracts some interesting looks - mostly from sheep and cows in fields!!  My long runs are getting progressively longer and am up to 17 miles now with 4 shorter runs in the week - well if you can call 8 miles short that is!  It is hard fitting it all in with working full time and 2 young children but I somehow manage it.  Counting down with 7 weeks to go now...

So what does 'ShelterBox' actually do? Well ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters, at a time when they need it the most.

ShelterBox are firmly established at the forefront of disaster relief and in the eleven years since the charity was founded have responded to nearly two hundred disasters in seventy five different countries.

It's all about the box as each ShelterBox contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and filtration equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a childrens activity pack and other useful items.

With current deployments in Turkey (earthquake), Somalia (drought), Columbia and Thailand (flooding), their work is more important than ever.

So, how could your donation help?

25.00 - Provides a ShelterBox which is a secure place where all the equipment can be transported. In the past, the empty boxes have been used as food containers or even a cot! The ShelterBox acts as a symbol of hope for those who really need it.

55.00 - Provides warmth and protection. Nights can get cold and staying warm means survival. Thermal blankets and groundsheets help people stay warm once they have lost their homes.

230.00 - Shelter for a family. Having a space to call your home is invaluable. The disaster relief tent is custom made and designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds and heavy rainfall.

590.00 - A new start. A complete ShelterBox will provide a family with the shelter and other vital equipment they need to survive after a disaster and start rebuilding their lives.

Thank you for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to ShelterBox.

ShelterBox do not 'buy' places for the London Marathon, relying instead on runners who secure ballot places. This means that every penny that I am sponsored will go direct to the charity as profit.

Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

*** A huge thank you to the anonymous donor who has donated a staggering fifty pounds to Shelterbox. Thank you so much....***
