Tim Gauntlett - London marathon for Nalango

3 hours 27 minutes and 35 seconds!

It may sound cliché, but it really was the though of how much money all my freinds have donated that gave me the extra motivation in the last 4 miles to get in under 3:30. Thank you so much. You have made me very happy and more importantly you have changed the lives of hundreds of Ugandan children (and will continue for years to come)!

Back in the Summer of 2008 my brother, Rob Gauntlett, again felt on top of the world having just completed his 180Degrees journey from pole to pole, but just six months later he was taken from us all when he and James Atkinson fell to their deaths; both just 21 years old.

We really felt it was unfair that someone so inspirational died so young. So we, Rob's family and friends, decided to build a school in Rob's memory, so that people can continue to draw on his inspiration for years to come. The Nalango Secondary School is exactly that.

Rob firmly believed that education is the key to a better society and so far, where the children were taught in the shade of a tree, you can now see a school. It has been such a rewarding project, because it has so visibly changed the lives of these children. It is not finished, however, and they need more classrooms, an exam hall and even a water tank.

Nalango Secondary School

In Uganda, Nalango Secondary School has some very energetic teachers and students, but no facilities to speak of - just the place Rob would have enjoyed working. Where there was bare earth, Rob's fund has so far helped to build 5 classrooms and 8 latrines - but the school is growing, in quality and size, and more classrooms, water tanks, latrines, desks, teachers' houses are all needed.  Work is being carried out through the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, set up themselves by parents after losing a young son, and who provide a brilliant example of good African development - passionate, efficient, consultative and with a long term involvement in each school and area.  More information can be found at http://www.henryvanstraubenzeemf.org.uk/
