Ron Pickering Memorial Fund
Ron Pickering, OBE, is probably best remembered for the 25 years he spent commentating alongside David Coleman for the BBC. But during his life, he combined the roles of teacher, prophet, critic, crusader, administrator and hopelessly besotted fan of track and field. He used his skill as a communicator to protect sport from its vices, be it racism or the curse of drugs because in his eyes Sport with its ethic of fair place was the most precious commodity we have to hand on to the next generation. His Memorial Fund is dedicated to assisting aspiring young track & field athletes who have shown by their attitude and dedication that they possess the qualities which will ensure the growth and protection of sport.
Stevenage Haven
Stevenage Haven exists to provide shelter and support to single homeless people. It achieves this by providing the following services: (1) An 18 bed emergency homeless hostel open 24 x 7 including day service provision which is also available to ex-residents. Residents each have an allocated keyworker and they jointly work together to develop a support plan which aims to address issues which have led to the client's homelessness. (2) 16 units of move-on accommodation for ex-hostel residents providing ongoing support for as long as needed. (3) A floating support service providing support to ex-residents in their own homes, allowing problems to be resolved without impacting tenancies. (4) A tenancy training course equipping clients with essential skills.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed, split 50/50, and passed to Stevenage Haven and the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

The 2011 London Marathon, on Sunday 17th April 2011, will be my 7th London Marathon, having run previously in 1982, 1987, 1989, 1993, 2001 and 2008.  This time I will be 78 years young when I run the 26.2 miles through the streets of London.   My children, grand children and  great grand children Daisy, Noah and Molly think I am mad - they are probably right!

I run regularly with Fairlands Valley Spartans and have run three other marathons and a number of half marathons and other distances.

Ron Pickering and I were in the same year at Stratford Grammar School and both of us took an active part in school sports.  The Ron Pickering Memorial Fund, run by Ron's widow Jean, carries on Ron's love for sport by supporting talented athletes with grants normally between £150 to £250 but in some cases up to £1,000.  80% of the current British Team have received support in the past.

I work for Stevenage Haven, a successful homeless charity which provides shelter and support for single homeless people.  We run an emergency single homeless hostel in Stevenage for 14 men and 4 women aged 16 and over - the hostel is always full and demand for beds always outstrips supply.  We also have two floating support workers providing support to ex-residents in their own homes.  We manage 17 units of move on accommodation which eases the chronic shortage of move on accommodation for our hostel residents.

I hope you will be able to sponsor me and in so doing support these two very worthwhile charities.  Thank you for your support.
