MS Trust
The Multiple Sclerosis Trust works with and for the 100,000 people in the UK with multiple sclerosis. Our vision is to enable people with MS to live their lives to the full. The MS Trust provides information that is tailored to what people want to know; education for health professionals about what people with multiple sclerosis need; research into better management of MS and support for anyone affected by MS.

Ruth Winden's MS Trust Appeal

Ruth Winden

My page:

Welcome to my fundraising page for the MS Trust.

I never thought I’d be doing a trek to the Grand Canyon for charity. I always thought that one day, when the children have grown up, my husband Paul and I would travel to the Grand Canyon together. It was meant to be the adventure of our life time.

After all, he was the healthy, fit, young man who climbed Kilimanjaro. I, ten years his senior, always joked that he would have to carry my rucksack.

Then the unimaginable happened. Paul was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS) in Spring 2015.

It was his optician who noticed that things were not quite right. If it hadn’t been for her, and her persistency, we would still not know. And it took the medical profession a while to figure out what was going on.

No one prepares you for news that you have an incurable disease. At the time, it makes no sense. It feels unreal. It leaves you speechless. And very very scared.

Because MS is a mean illness. The symptoms differ from person to person. Some people lose their eye sight, others lose their mobility. Some people are so fatigued they cannot get out of bed, whilst others manage to compete at the Paralympics. Go figure.

Whatever your symptoms, your life and that of your loved ones is turned upside down.

There is a lot of loss – of hope, of plans, of certainties – and of normal life that we all take for granted: Playing football with your children. Going to the pub down the road. Enjoying a walk along the river with your partner.

Who helped us get through the critical times?

Of course family and friends. (You know who you are. Thank you!)

Certainly not the Government (We can’t even get a Blue Badge, despite all the mobility issues. But that’s a different story!).

And then the MS charities. I can’t sing their praises enough. The practical support, empathy and information from the MS charities has made all the difference.

So what’s next?

After all the worry and sadness, I have decided to do something positive and that will make a difference – to fellow sufferers and their families. And that will also improve my health, as I am now the one who has to stay fit and capable of looking after everyone else.

My ambitious goal is to raise £5,000 for the MS Trust.

And this is how I am going to do it:

= I’m appealing to you, my friend. Will you support me and the MS Trust? Every Pound Sterling, Euro or Dollar counts. THANK YOU! (And if you are on social media, will you share my fundraising page?) Big hugs!

= I am offering 20 career consultations – if you donate at least £50 per session to my fundraising page. (You can do this anonymously to ensure confidentiality).

£50 is a massive discount from my normal rate but I want to make this an easy decision for you, or for someone who needs help with their careers. If you want to polish up your LinkedIn profile, want help with writing your CV or discuss job search strategies, get in touch.

I can even send you a voucher – these sessions make perfect gifts! Sessions must be taken by 1 November 2017 and will take place by phone or skype. Just drop me an email at if you are interested!

= I will engage with the local, regional and national press and hope to get as much publicity as possible. Stay tuned.

= I will activate my 4800 Twitter followers. If everyone gives just £1; I’m almost there. Wouldn’t that be cool? Come and say hi - @RuthWinden

= I will be blogging on about my adventure and progress with training and fundraising efforts.

= I have excellent give-aways and competitions planned. Watch this space.

It means the world to me, Paul and tens of thousands of MS sufferers.
