OCD-UK
OCD-UK is the leading national charity, independently working with and for people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Listed amongst the top 10 most debilitating illnesses by the World Health Organisation in terms of loss of income and decreased quality of life, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is thought to affect 2-3% of the UK population. It is our belief that everyone affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder should receive the most appropriate and the highest quality standards of care, support and treatment. Our objective is to make a positive and meaningful difference in the everyday lives of people affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, by providing accessible and effective support services and by campaigning for improved access and quality treatment and care for people with OCD. We believe it is vital that every person affected by OCD receives the highest quality of treatment and care that they are entitled to and deserve. We facilitate a safe environment for people affected by OCD to communicate with each other and provide mutual understanding and support.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page.

Now where do I start with my big secret…ok well here goes… (Deep breath)

Many of you have probably met someone who cleans their house a little more than usual, may even wash their hands that little bit longer than most and have had a little laugh at them and joked about them suffering with OCD. There are many people who might do these things and just be a little extra careful but for those of us who do it because we have to, that’s when it’s not so funny.

I’ve suffered with OCD since I was about 14 years old. I believe it is because of the OCD that I also suffered from an eating disorder from age 14 to 17 that nearly had me admitted to hospital. It has affected my life in many ways, some of which I’m still too embarrassed to admit. I was the one laughed at for not eating the end of my chips at McDonalds with my school mates, the fussy eater, the freak.

Last year I reached what I would say was my lowest point, I couldn’t make food for myself or even eat with my hands. I challenge you all to try making tea and toast without touching the bread, tea bags and only being able to touch the end of the teaspoon (without touching any other spoons in the drawer) etc you will begin to understand how draining my days could be!! I mean that was just breakfast!!!

I finally admitted to myself that I couldn’t carry on living with OCD and decided to find a therapist to help. The day I first went for help I was so overwhelmed at what a big step I had actually just taken that I got in the car and had a little cry (which if you ask my partner, she’ll tell you that that is an extremely rare occurrence!!!).

I’ve been seeing my Therapist (Julie) for about 6 months now and I really feel happy with what I have achieved in that time. After about two or three sessions I was able to make tea and prepare food and eat it with my hands. I think my accomplishments can be partly put down to having such a good relationship with Julie, I feel I can tell her anything and know that she really understands and wants to help (even if, on occasions,  she has been a bit more than a little harsh on me…one word..Dettol!! he he). I’m also very lucky to have such a supportive partner and a handful of close friends who I feel really appreciate what a challenge it has been for me.

I know that I still have a long way to go but after being able to eat in several restaurants, drink tea at friends’ houses and finally be able to do a food shop, in a trolley, I am determined to get to a point where I can happily say I am “normal” whatever that is.

As part of my challenge, I have decided to take part in the Great British 10k as I wanted to raise awareness of the effects of OCD and be more open with my friends and family.

I will be running for OCD-UK, which is an amazing charity who offers great support to people like me. Your donation will be greatly appreciated and spent wisely!!!
