Epilepsy Research UK
Epilepsy Research UK is the only national charity exclusively dedicated to research into epilepsy. Over 600,000 people in the UK have a diagnosis of epilepsy, that is 1 in 103. Epilepsy can take many forms from a momentary blank spell to a dramatic major convulsion. Even with control of seizures, the quality of life for people with epilepsy can be unpredictable and restricted. However, new research offers the very real possibility of developing therapies that could prevent these deaths and transform the lives of those affected. Developments in drug therapy and medical scanning, along with major breakthroughs in the study of the human genome, mean that great progress has been made in understanding the causes of epilepsy in recent years. Even greater advances will be made in the coming years and our research will be at the forefront of developments to control, and perhaps even cure, epilepsy. By supporting Epilepsy Research UK you could make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people.

My page:

Hi everyone and thank you so much for visiting our donation page!

On the 10th October 2010 Leigh, Myra and I will be running 5k in the Maidstone Big Fun Run in aid of Epilepsy Research UK. In September 2007 at aged 33 my sister Sue passed away after a seizure, It was a massive shock for all of Sue's friends and family and we all miss her terribly.

About 1000 people die every year from epilepsy, approximately half of these deaths are attributed to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). This is when a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and the post-mortem fails to establish any other cause of death.

Several different mechanisms may be involved, and there may be no single explanation for all cases. The two primary explanations that are most likely are:

  • Cardiac: If there is an electrical storm in the brain it may spread to areas that control heartbeat. This could cause a fatal cardiac event.
  • Respiratory: An electrical storm may spread to the part of the brain responsible for respiration. It is known that many people who experience seizures stop breathing for a significant time.

Epilepsy Research UK is the only national charity solely dedicated to epilepsy research. They aim to substantially increase the funding available for research into the causes, treatment and prevention of this debilitating condition, which affects adults and children.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Thank you very much for your donation,

Tim, Myra and Leigh
