Charity

Bishop Simeon Trust
The Bishop Simeon Trust, established in the UK in 1989, exists to support through education and development projects those most disadvantaged South Africans who still suffer from the inequalities and injustices of apartheid and its legacy, or who are most severely affected by the HIV/AIDS. The charity supports a large amount of HIV/AIDS community projects in South Africa where the pandemic has reached extraordinary proportions. As the number of infected people grows and the illness spreads, the number of people left in its wake also increases. Part of the work of eradicating HIV/AIDS therefore involves providing support, care and education for those affected in order to minimise their vulnerability to the illness.

The Race Against Time 2010

Fundraiser:
Simon Cox

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SimonCox

Hi, thanks for sponsoring and helping me raise money for a great cause!!!

This year's Race Against Time was a great success, both on and off the road, raising over £30,000! You can read all about the ride and see photos at fellow rider Martin Thomas' superb blog at http://road.cc/blogs/martin-thomas

The name of the ride is inspired by another race against time - the race to lower the rate at which new HIV infections occur in South Africa, and to help people already living with HIV-AIDS and their families. The Bishop Simeon Trust has been supporting disadvantaged families, in particular those devastated by HIV-AIDS, in South Africa since 1989. As the disease spreads the Trust's work is vital, not only in providing food and support for those left behind, including thousands of orphaned children, but also in providing vital education for those who remain so that they can help themselves. Even a small donation from you can make a huge difference - as you can see below.

THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM

  • An estimated 5.2 million people were living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa in 2008, more than in any other country.
  • It is believed that in 2008, over 250,000 South Africans died of AIDS.
  • National prevalence is around 11%, with some age groups being particularly affected. Almost one-in-three women aged 25-29, and over a quarter of men aged 30-34, are living with HIV.
  • There were an estimated 280,000 under-15s living with HIV in 2007, a figure that almost doubled since 2001.
  • There are 1.4 million AIDS orphans in South Africa, and it is estimated that the HIV/AIDS epidemic has created half of the country's orphans.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • £5 a month will provide a meal each day for a child at pre-school for a month.
  • £5 a month will buy seeds for a community garden which will feed up to 10 families.
  • £7 a month can provide a child with basic food and clothing.
  • £10 a week pays for a secondary school bursary for an orphaned child.
  • £15 will buy one food parcel of rice, vegetable, maize, oil, salt, sugar, tea for a family.
  • £40 will buy one home based care kit (each kit contains essential medications such as painkillers, Vaseline, gloves, bandages and creams).
  • £45 supports one volunteer community worker for a month, enabling them to provide care for up to 10 families.
  • £50 a month pays for the home based carers who make the all difference for families who are living in isolation and fear, to give them hope and access to medical support and dignity.
  • £58 is a monthly stipend for a home based care worker who provides care for up to 10 families.
  • £71 each month ensures vulnerable children can have a child advocate who looks after their needs when parents become too sick, or have died.
  • £80 pays for a four month course in IT skills and workplace training.
  • £100 is the average BST educational bursary for a disadvantaged child at secondary school.
  • £130-150 per year will pay for additional costs for a secondary school student (this covers transport, school uniform, books and stationary costs).
  • £160 (average budget of 20p per day) will feed 40 children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS for 1 month.
  • £250-350 will buy stationery, books and toys for a township pre-school in need.
  • £500 bursary will cover tuition and additional support for a child in need.
  • £3000 pays for a year studying at degree level including living costs for a young person.

Through Virgin Money Giving, your donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
