Suzie Grogan's Hike for Hospices

Suzie Grogan

My page:

Hi, thanks for visiting this page! On the 22nd and 23rd of May 2017 I will be walking the 20 miles of the Ullswater Way in the Lake District, to raise money for St Margaret's Somerset Hospice and Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland.

To see photos relating to the walk, and to lymphoedema, click HERE.

I have a condition called lymphoedema, which is a chronic condition which causes swelling in body tissues. I have primary lymphoedema, which means I was born with it, but it can also develop after cancer treatment, especially breast cancer. It can be painful and dangerous as it is caused by a defective lymphatic system, which is the means by which our bodies fight infection and remove excess fluid. The risk of cellulitis is high, the swelling is uncomfortable and seriously affects mobility and there is no cure. Awareness of the condition is important and in doing this walk I also want to make sure the public know as much about it as possible.

I have been lucky enough to have treatment for the condition at St Margaret's Somerset Hospice and the swelling in my legs is under control. Similar treatment is available in Cumbria via Hospice at Home and the nurse specialists who support us are very special people. Treatment is long-term and equipment always needs updating. NHS funding doesn't cover the costs so charities step in to ensure we get the best care possible.

I love the Lake District and it seemed an ideal place to undertake this challenge to thank the charities for their help and to raise vital funds.
