STOP PRESS: Keep the money rolling in!  The University of London Society of Change Ringers are ringing carols tonight (9th December) in Trafalgar Square from 8pm to 9pm to raise more money for this appeal.

From 29th April to 19th May 2011, Peter Valuks, Master of the Southwark Cathedral Society of Bellringers cycled 1,310 miles solo to raise money for major works to the historic bells at the Cathedral.  These works are needed to ensure the bells, which were cast and hung in the tower in 1735, continue to ring into their fourth century.

PV at Devils Dyke

Peter cycled on his own, carrying a tent to sleep in and did not have any logistical support.  The cycle ride started at Lizard Point in Cornwall on 29th May, visited Lands End the following day and went on to John O'Groats and finished at Duncansby Head.  The idea of the ride was to visit the furthest points on the British mainland to the S, SW, W, NW, N and NE.  More details and a map of the route can be found here

Peter visited the SE and E points of the British mainland, covering 185 miles in two days, on his warm-up ride on the weekend of 16th and 17th April.

More information on the event, the bells, the appeal and a journal of the ride can be found here.

Peter Valuks is the Master of the <a href="http://southwark-bells.org.uk/" target="_blank">Southwark Cathedral Society of Bellringers</a>.
He has been a bellringer for 34 years having learnt to ring a bell when he was 11 years old.
As well as being Master of the Southwark Cathedral band, he is also a member of the St Paul's Cathedral Guild of Ringers, the St Martin-in-the-Fields band, the <a href="http://www.surreybellringers.org.uk/" target="_blank">Surrey Association of Church Bell Ringers</a> and is a member and past Master of the <a href="http://www.ascy.org.uk/" target="_blank">Ancient Society of College Youths</a>.

Peter grew up in Somerset and was a keen cyclist in his youth not least as a means to get to rural churches to ring their bells.  He carried out a sponsored cycle ride for his local church roof appeal, and cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End for Christian Aid in 1983.
<a href="http://pvsbigride.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/john-o-groats-1983.jpg"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-82 size-medium" title="John O Groats 1983" src="http://pvsbigride.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/john-o-groats-1983.jpg?w=222" alt="" width="222" height="300" /></a>
After learning to drive in his late teens, his interest in cycling waned somewhat, but it has been re-kindled in recent years by becoming a member of the Society of Roving Ringers, a society which combines Bellringing with cycling for an annual week-long tour.  In recent years he has twice cycled the Wessex 100 cycle ride (100 miles in a day) for charity.
As a day job, Peter works in IT for the <a href="http://ft.com/" target="_blank">Financial Times</a>.
