Blue Ventures
Blue Ventures believes that with the right knowledge, developing coastal communities can live in harmony with their marine environments. Our research gives coastal communities the knowledge and skills they need to live sustainably. To achieve this we have a team of dedicated researchers and volunteers who study all aspects of the marine ecosystem. The results from our work help us to propose new ideas to benefit coastal communities everywhere.

Hi everyone!

As you all know I'm taking on a hefty challenge this summer - hiking 1293 miles over 54 days from John o' Groats to Land's End. It'll be worth every single blister though if it means spreading the word - and hopefully raising a lot of cash - for some truly pioneering work being carried out in Madagascar by Blue Ventures.

Not only are they carrying out marine conservation but they've taken the inspired step of integrating reproductive and sexual health services into the project - which at first may seem surprising but actually makes a mind-bogglingly ridiculous amount of sense.

The fish stocks are only being depleted and the reefs damaged because the fishermen are struggling to provide enough food in the midst of a population explosion. Conservation work on the reef would be doomed to fail without supporting the villagers to overcome the underlying cause of their crisis. By providing basic family planning to those who want it, and education on conserving their coastal resources, the community now has a chance of being able to feed itself for generations to come.

What’s more, for what is such a small amount of money relatively-speaking, by providing basic sexual and reproductive health services they can help to improve survival rates for mother and baby, provide fulfilling careers for villagers as peer educators and – perhaps one of the most moving aspects for me – help to empower the local women.

Thank you so much for anything you can donate to support this work - please spread the word to anyone you can!
