The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. The RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews rescue an average of 23 people a day around the coasts and waterways of the UK and the Republic of Ireland. From 235 lifeboat stations, they are well trained and equipped to put to sea in the most fearsome conditions when the call comes. RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 200 beaches in the UK. As well as rescuing people from the water, they are also on hand for first aid and safety advice, making sure everyone can make the most of their day at the beach. Are you passionate about the water? Do you want to be part of a lifesaving team? Whatever the reason for your interest in our work, we’d love to have you onboard. The RNLI is an independent charity and receives no government funding. We rely on public support.

The RNLI Tour of Britain

Rad Hart-George, Nick Pleydell-Bouverie

My page:

Hi folks,

Thanks for visiting our page. We (Nick and Rad) have just finished cycling around all the lifeboat stations in Britain in an effort to raise £70,000 for the RNLI.

You may not be aware that the RNLI is a charity that relies entirely on donations- it receives no government funding at all, yet we treat it just like any other emergency service. In addition to this, the crew are almost all volunteers, giving up their time and putting their lives on the line in order to help others who are in trouble at sea, on estuaries or inland during flooding. Quite remarkable, I think you will agree.

The adventure took seven years divided up as follows:

  • 'Stage 1' (Starting in London around the Kent coast and along the south coast to Painton, Devon)
  • 'Stage 2' (Paignton along the south coast to Land's End, around the corner and up into South Wales- finishing in Newport) and
  • 'Stage 3' (Newport around the entire Welsh coast finishing in Chester)
  • 'Stage 4' (Chester to Oban in Scotland via the Inner Hebrides)
  • 'Stage 5' (Oban to Inverness via the Outer Hebrides and Orknies)
  • 'Stage 6' (Inverness to Redcar, just south of Newcastle
  • 'Stage 7' from Redcar to London around Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.

Photos and diary updates can be found on our blog ( and we will also be tweeting our adventures (our twitter name is: Rad_and_Nick).

We are very grateful for any amount of money donated and thank you for helping save lives with the RNLI.
