Charities

Hospiscare
Hospiscare is the local hospice charity, delivering expert end of life care for Exeter, mid and east Devon. We care for patients in our Hospice, Day Care centres and in the community.
Force Cancer Charity
FORCE is a Devon based charity committed to people whose lives are affected by cancer. Over the last 29 years FORCE has raised over £12 million to help fund local cancer services. Why local? Simply because anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves the best possible treatment and professional support close to home. Although FORCE was originally set up in 1987 to fund local research, (Friends of the Oncology and Radiotherapy Centre Exeter); the Charity has responded to the changing needs of people affected by cancer. In 2004 we opened a purpose built Cancer Support and Information Centre in the grounds of the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. The Centre offers a relaxing supportive environment where people can access a full range of advice, support and information under one roof. In addition to supportive care, and the purchase of important equipment to improve treatment, FORCE remains committed to local cancer research. FORCE funds research within the Peninsula Medical School which is currently focused on lung and ovarian cancers. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK and it can spread to the brain as a secondary tumour. Our research is focused on understanding how this cancer spreads through the behaviour of certain cells. Ovarian cancer is notoriously difficult to treat because the early stages of the disease are relatively symptom-free and patients are often not diagnosed until the cancer has spread. The actual processes involved in the spread of ovarian cancer are not really understood and FORCE funded research is hoping to change this. This year our funding requirements will top £1.25 million - all of this sum will be raised through voluntary contributions. In an increasingly global world, FORCE focuses on local people, offering help and support, face to face. If you would like to learn more about the work of FORCE please call 01392 402875.

Hospicecare and Force are 2 charities that really make a difference when people are at their lowest and with cancer now affecting a reported 1 in 2 people in their lifetimes they are charities that have, and will, touch many of us.

In memory of my mother Kathryn Hall who battled bravely and to try to raise some money as well as fulfil a personal desire I am part of an intrepid team of 4 heading off from John O'Groats on 1 August hoping to arrive safely in Land's End some 9 days later by pedal power. About 973 miles plus wrong turns

If you can please donate. Whether the stimulus is knowing me, one of my team mates, fond memories of Kathryn or just because you think the cause is worthwhile go for it! Our side of the bargain is that we will do our best to complete the task and pay all our expenses so you can be sure all your money goes to the charities.

The team is myself, my sister Lisa, her husband Jinx and Tony's son in law Jim Larter. We are going to be supported en route by Tony and Flick. We will be  staying at sister Kate's, Tim will be joining us for the last 2 or 3 days and we may as well pop in for lunch at my dad's on the way through - a family affair!

Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
