London to Paris - 300 Miles in 24 Hours

Hi, thanks for visiting our page.

Update - 29th July

We did it, Blackheath to the Eiffel Tower in 23 1/2 hours. Each cycling 200 miles over 10 1/2 hours. The ride down to Dover was fast and hilly. The first feedstation being located at an Indian resturant was a new experience but now I can vouch for the nutritional value of a kemma naan. Not sure what the Port Authorities were thinking trying to security check 158 cyclists, giving up with just 5 minutes to spare. 90 miles in and a welcomed oportunity for a nap. Cycling in France is always a pleasure. Cycling through the night was a fantastic experience but as dawn broke the mist decended and so not much sightseeing until the outskirts of Paris. Progress over the last 10 miles into Paris were slow due to being stopped at virtually every traffic light. Final arrival at the Eiffel Tower and lots of back slapping. Quick shower, couple'ish of beers and then 16 hours solid sleep.

Thanks to everyone who has given us help and support over the past few months and collectively we will raise over £ 150,000 for Scope.

Update - 18th July

Not quite the final training weekend Core had planned for us. Flo was in an accident on Friday night and taken to A&E at Addenbrookes. At least I now know that 40 hours without sleeps is a breeze. I should have put my Turbo Trainer in the ambulance to while away the anxious hours waiting for various test results to come back. Thankfully the suspected fractured neck was given the all clear and Flo is back home. I will be thinking of the kind staff working through the night this coming Saturday cycling in the dark through france.

The Garden Party on 27th June was a great success and has so far raised an amazing £ 1,100 (+ Gift Aid). Our thanks to Di and her helpers for all their hard work. We were blessed with glorious sunshine but not football. It was also a pleasure to welcome Jamie and David, pupils at Meldreth Manor, who had an enjoyable time being terrorised by the puppies.

My new bike has now been in service for 3 weeks and covered 800 comfortable miles. Ali has had his bike expertly setup and tuned. Our thanks to Stephen and his team at Primo Cycles in Cambridge fro their patience and hard work.If Carlsberg did bike shops, this would be it!

Finally, thanks to everyone fro our donation and support.

Here we go.....

Update - 7th June

We are now kitted in our "team core cambridge" tops. Training is going well under Core's watchful eye. Ali is mid-stream in his exams but seems to spend all his time pimping his bike. The St Georges Day dinner at the Chequers was a great success and thanks must go to Peter, the Landlord, for all his hard work and to all those that attended.

Next event is the Garden Party at Cherry Trees on the 27th June, further details to follow.

Original Post

Ali (16), currently finishing his GCSE exams at Comberton Village College and myslef are cycling all the way from London to Paris in an astonishing 24 hours, to raise money for the disability charity Scope.

Setting off from London’s Blackheath in the early hours of the morning of 23rd July, we will alternate riders as we traverse the Kent countryside to Dover where we board a ferry to Calais. Following the crossing and under the cover of falling darkness, we will continue pedalling through rural France until sunrise when we will begin to approach the Parisian suburbs. From here it’s a storm through the ‘City of Love’ to the finish line under the Eiffel Tower, arriving exactly 24 hours after we set off and crossing the finish line the same weekend as the Tour de France arrives in the city. For further details of the challenge see www.london2paris24.com

We would like to thank Dan and his team at Core Cambridge for their kind sponsorship and support. Core Cambridge is a centre of excellence for injury rehabilitation and sports performance. We have been though an initial assessment to identify specific training needs and the team are now employing techniques and principles from Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy and Strength & Conditioning to ensure that we cross the finish line in Paris in as little pain as possible. You can follow our training progress on Core’s Blog at www.core-cambridge.com

We decided to take part in the event and raise money for Scope having witnessed the excellent of work Scope undertakes in supporting disabled people to enjoy the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. In particular, at Meldreth Manor School, our local Scope residential and day school. The school offers a broad and balanced education to 32 pupils from nine to 19+ years. Most have physical impairments and severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities. There is also a transition service based on the same site. It seeks to fill the gap between school and adult life by offering life and social skills training designed specifically for young disabled adults over three years. Thank your for your donation and kind support.
