Charities

MS Society
The MS Society is the UK's largest organisation dedicated to supporting the 100,000 people, their families and carers affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults and is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 45. Our key services and projects include a national freephone helpline, respite care, an MS nurses programme, support for young people caring for families or relatives with MS, funding a dedicated MRI scanner for the diagnosis of MS, providing award-winning information publications and offering welfare grants for home adapdations and wheelchairs.
RDA
RDA delivers opportunities for therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities. 500 Member Groups across the UK help 26,500 people to take part in equestrian activities. We work across the spectrum of disabilities, age range and social status and the focus of our work is to ensure that each individual gets direct therapeutic benefit and the opportunity to achieve their personal goals. Although RDA was set up to work mainly with people with physical disabilities, RDA Groups are now working across the spectrum of disabilities, age range, social status and urban and rural environments. The focus of our work is to ensure that each individual has the chance to derive a direct therapeutic benefit and the opportunity to achieve their personal goal (whether that be learning a very simple skill or winning a major competition). RDA gives individuals the opportunity to: Reach therapeutic goals Achieve their personal ambitions Combat social isolation Develop life skills Experience the outdoors Connect with animals Although the current level of service delivered by RDA is truly amazing, we are aware that there are many more people who merit help and support. Currently RDA fails to meet the increasing demand for riding and carriage driving opportunities, with the vast majority of RDA Groups reporting a waiting list. It is the shortfall in volunteer numbers that severely restricts the availability of RDA services, and significantly limits the current number of rider and driver opportunities nationally. The continuing success of RDA is wholly dependent on voluntary help and donations. We need this help more than ever.
MS Trust
The Multiple Sclerosis Trust works with and for the 100,000 people in the UK with multiple sclerosis. Our vision is to enable people with MS to live their lives to the full. The MS Trust provides information that is tailored to what people want to know; education for health professionals about what people with multiple sclerosis need; research into better management of MS and support for anyone affected by MS.

I was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis in 2001 and since then have tried to do many things including horse riding which has proved to be one of the most rewarding activities for me.

I have now been riding for over two years, starting with The Portman group of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) based at Bryanston School, Blandford. I continue to ride there and also at Stocks Farm Equestrian Centre, West Parley. Riding I find is great exercise, it improves my balance and core stability, it is something I very much enjoy and I am improving all the time (slowly).

I am doing a sponsored ride on Saturday 18th September to raise funds for The Bournemouth & District MS Society (207495), The MS Trust (1088353) and Portman RDA Group (1088609). All money donated will be divided equally between the three charities as they have all been very important to me since my diagnosis and they benefit many others.

This will be of great personal significance to me as the planned route will be departing from our home in Corfe Lodge Road and riding across an area I have known most of my life.  The route will be as follows:

  • Corfe Lodge Road to Wareham Road Corfe Mullen.
  • Wareham Road to The Holme Bush pub
  • Opposite Holme Bush pub onto Beacon Lane leading to Upton Heath
  • Bridleway around Upton Heath joining the Roman Road (Bridleway)
  • Roman Road finishing at Corfe Lodge Road

The route is approximately 4 miles long and very mixed terrain. Debbie Gooden (Stables Manager) from Bryanston will be accompanying me riding Spartan (Titan's best mate).

I will be riding Titan a 6 year old Belgian draught horse who is stabled at Bryanston School and belongs to the Portman RDA Group. He was recently purchased with a grant from ‘Grass Roots Dorset’ fund.

Anyone wishing to come along to watch me depart or return will be very welcome or to join us at any point on the route.
