Opportunity International is a pioneer and global leader in providing microfinance and training to the working poor. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people in poverty to transform their lives, by providing access to sustainable financial services and training so they can unlock their own potential and work their way out of poverty. 98% of Opportunity International loans are repaid with interest, and lent again. By also creating access to secure savings accounts, money, which used to lie dormant under mattresses or in the ground, is brought into circulation and lent to local people in need of capital to grow businesses. Microfinance is an effective solution to poverty because it gives poor people access to basic financial services, including small loans, savings, insurance and business training. This empowers them to develop a small business, which provides an income and the dignity of work. We differ from commercial banks by providing these services to those who wouldn’t usually qualify for them, because they have no form of collateral or formal identification, or they live in rural areas. This finance is a hand up not a hand out.
