For over 60 years UNICEF has been the world's leader for children, working on the ground in more than 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Visa Ride Across Britain Team 2012

Mark Shaw, Paula Redmond, Paul Christie

My page:

On the 9th September 2012, three of us from Visa will be undertaking a momentous challenge; we will be taking part in the Ride Across Britain (RAB) cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats in only 9 days.

Our challenge will entail 960 grueling miles across some of the most beautiful scenery Britain has to offer.

The route will be broken into 9 stages averaging 106 miles a day.

Britain is beautiful but it is also hilly. In 2011 Deloitte RAB riders climbed over 20,000m over the 9 days. If you are wondering, that is over 17 times up Alpe d’Huez and 4 times the amount of climbing involved in La Marmotte in the Alps!

All monies donated will be split equally between two charities

About Us

Paul Christie “I started cycling for the first time in 16 years in 2010, I weighed a massive 19 ½ stone and my first 4 mile cycle almost made me cry with effort. I set myself the challenge of going from this to cycling Brussels to Frankfurt with Visa 4 months later. Two years later, I have now lost 5 stone and regularly cycle 100 – 250 miles a week. To me the RAB is the ultimate in lifetime cycling challenges!”

Mark Shaw “While I have always been a keen sportsperson, I re-started my cycling career in my mid-thirties by cycling the 2.5miles to the station each day. Since then, cycling has become a daily part of my life and I have now become quite the cycling cliché – a MAMIL if you want to call it that !! [just Google it!]. I have worked my up to 40, 60 and 100mile sportives, onto a couple of 4-day, 350mile jaunts across Europe with Visa and now this!! What’s to say, other than this is a truly massive physical and mental challenge and a great opportunity to raise some important and much-needed funds for 2 really worthy charities.”

Paula Redmond “I did my first endurance event to raise funds for charity in 1995 and since then I have regularly set myself difficult physical challenges to push myself beyond mental and physical boundaries for good causes.  I have friends who have overcome great hardship, pain and disability to achieve amazing things and that always encourages me to try harder and not to give up.   I am really grateful to Deloitte for giving me the opportunity to join this epic challenge, see more of my beautiful country and make a difference to those less fortunate.  I am immensely proud to be supporting our two chosen charities, Paralympics GB and UNICEF.”
