The Unlikely Heroes of Telemark

Seventy-five years ago a group of Norwegian saboteurs were dropped into the arctic embrace of the Hardangervidda in Norway. This was to be the start of a series of operations that made up the epic story behind the Heroes of Telemark, an incredible adventure which has been recounted by Hollywood and survival experts alike, and has become a story synonymous with bravery, endurance and the indomitability of the human spirit.

We are fortunate that we will never have to fully experience the extreme tests of character and fortitude that these courageous young men endured, however in March 2017 we will attempt to recreate part of their heroic 500km journey across Norway, and re-enact the successful raid on the Vermork heavy water factory that denied Hitler the vital ingredient to produce an atom bomb and the subsequent implications that would have changed the world.

Our team of eight unlikely modern day adventurers will be dropped off in the middle of the Hardangervidda, the highest plateau in Northern Europe known for its extreme arctic conditions, from where we will proceed on cross country skis for 120km pulling only essential equipment (and painkillers!), following the original infiltration route of Operation Gunnerside. Real life heroes, formerly of the British Special Forces, will accompany us to make sure we attack the right target, don’t do anything too stupid, and survive! We in turn will attempt not to embarrass them after months of extreme roller ski practice in Hyde Park, countless hours of PT work, and the rigours of survival training in the Cairngorms.

We have many motivations for embarking on this mission, for Alex Lowrie it is the chance to follow in his Great Uncle's footsteps who was one of the original saboteurs, for others it is a personal test of endurance and fitness. But to give that extra determination and drive when the tank is empty, struggling into a 50mph head wind, uphill, with blisters forming and the temperature gauge at -20°c, we will all be (including those representatives of the Special Forces) incentivised by raising as much money as we can for some excellent causes. The charities have been chosen for their personal meaning to team members, and the good work they do across the charity spectrum at both national and grass root levels.

We are self-funding this expedition, so 100% of funds raised will be going directly to our chosen charities. If you would like to learn more about the charities, then please click on their respective links.  Meanwhile your generosity is greatly appreciated, and every penny raised will spur us on in the recreation of this epic WW2 operation.

Many thanks
