Hi!

I’m running the London Marathon on 23rd April 2017 for a charity that is very close to my family’s heart: Young Epilepsy

My baby nephew Jacob suffered from a rare form of epilepsy called Infantile Spasms/ West Syndrome from a very young age and Young Epilepsy were a great help to my brother-in-law Iain, (soon to be) sister-in-law Sophie and of course little Jacob.

Jacob started to have seizures from around 5 months old and due to lack of awareness this was misdiagnosed. Jacob started regressing in development and losing the skills he had learnt before the seizures, he was diagnosed in January 2016 at 9 months old where he had the developmental age of a new born.

Jacob was put on high doses of medication and he has been seizure free since then **Touch wood** they stay away!

Since then Jacob has come on leaps and bounds...smiling, giggling, eating, rolling and now even sitting! It has been a struggle for our whole family but the help and the support of Young Epilepsy helped massively knowing there were people out there who could understand and support us.

Young Epilepsy were very helpful with the information they had provided Sophie and Iain with Jacobs condition, they also provided helplines and people they could talk to for support and advise.

Young Epilepsy focus on children and young people with epilepsy, they make it their mission to provide expert information, training and advise to professionals and families. They are helping to develop, deliver and support pioneering research that will make a difference to children and young people like Jacob, their parents and carers.

My cousin’s daughter also has epilepsy, Khaleesi has complex epilepsy with 5 different seizure types and spent several months in and out of hospital whilst the doctors tried to find the right combination of medication. Like Jacob her development was effected and she has worked really hard attending her physiotherapy club to rebuild all her skills. Khaleesi is now back at pre-school 3 days a week and looking forward to starting school in September. My cousin said of Young Epilepsy:

"When you’re laying by your child’s bedside in Great Ormond Street having sleepless nights trying to understand what the doctors are telling you and making sense of how this will impact your child’s life, charities like Young Epilepsy are incredible supportive. To be able to read articles on their website and order information packs to build up knowledge, and to hear others experiences was exactly what I needed to find the confidence to be the informed parent my daughter needed me to be, so I could talk to her doctors and understand what she was going through. Young Epilepsy also campaign for improvements to school policies and teacher training which is vital for my daughter, Jacob and all the other children who battle seizures through their daily life"

So... Please dig into that wallet and donate generously to enable Young Epilepsy to continue their good work.

As you can see, the charity have given a lot of support to our family and now we want to give something back.

I thought the least I could do was to run 26.2 miles.

I hope you will all agree that this is no mean feat and having done it once before in 2011 I unfortunately already know how painful it is going to be. It will no doubt be a huge task on the day but it will also require months of hard work and training and I will not be taking the task lightly.

If it helps relieve the pain of parting with your money in anyway to picture me in pain both on training runs and during the main event then go for it :)

As well as the run, which I'll be doing solo, with the help of my family we will be running a few extra fund raising initiatives the main event of which will be a race night at Southgate Rugby Club on Friday 10th February so save the date for that one and hope to see you there! It promises to be a fun filled night and gives you the chance to win some money for yourself whilst supporting a good cause.

A huge, massive, gargantuan, dare I say Marathon "Thank You" for any donation you can make big or small, it really means a lot to our family and of course the amazing workers at Young Epilepsy.

Peace out.
