Well they did it........and the tortoise won!

What an amazing event - Richard completed it in 4.25.34 and Ian in 4.36.33.

See below for their account of the day.

The average winning time was 4.31.04 therefore the winner of the iPod touch was Alan Bassett from Groupama Insurances - Well done!

Richard - A truly remarkable experience. You really can’t imagine how amazing the crowds are until you’ve experienced them first hand.

I made a good start cunningly over taking the Hare by WALKING up the outside of the starting point to get over the start line five minutes ahead of Ian whilst he battled to RUN through the crowds. At about six miles however I felt a barge from behind and there was the little Hare up to his old tricks of trying to topple me over as he sprinted past me muttering ‘how have you got in front of me?’. Little did I know that the Hare had worn himself (and the soles of his poor little pores) out by around 20 miles and at some point, despite dehydrating and flagging a little myself at around 18 miles I managed to catch and pass the now not so speedy Hare and finish 10 minutes ahead. It really was a tale of the Tortoise and the Hare!!

May I say an absolutely massive thank you to everyone that has sponsored us or past on their words of encouragement. You truly inspired us and through your kind generosity we have managed to already raise over £5500 for Sense.

I should also thank my Osteopath, Sports Massage Therapist, GP, Local Pharmacist, Chiropractor, Hypnotherapist, Yoga Master, Herbalist, Spiritualist, Feng Shui expert, and all other reams of medical experts that helped me to the start and the finish of the race.

My legs are starting to mend (although I am still doing a funny walk and apparently watching me tackle the stairs is great entertainment) and I’m getting itchy feet thinking about my next run…..and Marathon!!!!!!

Thank you so much again – we could not have done this without your support.

Ian - What an amazing day! It started with a quick slice of toast in the hotel followed by a cheery good morning and good luck from the staff at Liverpool Street station.

The rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and we set off after being chased by a 6ft fluffy shark, seeing Hulk in his Hot Pants and two guys in mankinis.  I stumbled across Richard who had somehow snuck in front of me at the start (Stewards enquiry?). All was going well, the brass bands were playing, the pirates were cheering, the Daily Sport girls where providing a sponge down and I reached tower bridge feeling quite comfortable if a little behind schedule but happy and still smiling.

So off I headed towards the Isle of Dogs and the 2nd half of the marathon. Somewhere between 17 & 18 miles, I hit ‘the wall’ and felt as though there was no energy left in the legs. Maybe it was the sweets I was taking off of complete strangers (what would the parents say) or the quick half of Fullers Pride I was given by a spectator but coming up to 21 miles, my legs found some energy reserves and as the carnival atmosphere increased the end was getting nearer.

The feeling of crossing the line was one of great satisfaction, pride, exhaustion and relief at having completed all 26.2 miles and all that was left to do was pop all 7 of my blisters!!!!!

Thank you so much to all of you who have supported us on this epic journey.

The Tortoise and the Hare – will the Tortoise win?
(See training updates below)

Well, believe it or not, two employees of Arc Legal ar
e this year taking part in the London Marathon.

For the first time ever, Richard Finan, Director and Ian Brown, Senior Claims and Complaints Advisor are taking part in the 26.2 mile race to raise funds under Arc Legal’s charity arm, Arc Angels, for Sense - the leading national charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind.  It is an extremely worthwhile cause and more information can be found at www.sense.org.uk.

Ian is in serious training and being as fit and as fast as a Hare, is hoping to sprint across the finish line in (an impressive) 4 and a bit hours. Richard is also in serious training however, more akin to a Tortoise’s pace.  Nevertheless, he does hope to cross the finish line in (an also impressive) 5 and a bit hours (the bit being quite large) even if he walks some of the course!

Given the charitable cause, and the extreme pain and discomfort they are both likely to be in leading up to and on Sunday 25th April, plus the weeks following, we are hoping you will sponsor us to show your support and raise vital funds for Sense.  To boost the sponsorship we are holding a competition and Arc Legal have donated an iPod Touch as the prize.  See competition information below.

The winner will be the person who guesses our average winning time to the nearest second.

Many thanks for your support,

Richard & Ian

Will we make it round in our estimated times?
Will the chafing be too much to bear?

TRAINING UPDATES

Ian - 11.4.10 - When I started training, I didn’t think I’d ever get to the point where I didn’t consider 13 miles as a long way, however with the training taper now in full flow, I had to drop the mileage for my long Sunday run to ‘only’ 13 miles. My plan was to run this nice and steadily and then increase my pace in the last 2 miles. This I did and completed the 13 miles in a reasonable 1hr 50mins. With under 2 weeks to go, I am getting very excited about the marathon, however, I am starting to experience the common ‘taper paranoia’, this being that I will be losing all the fitness I have built up in training due to running less. I’ll keep my finger crossed the training programmes are right!!!

Whilst I am here, thank you to everyone that has sponsored us so far, your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Richard - 11.4.10 - Oh the joy of taper down!!
I completed the Paddock Wood Half marathon on Sunday (3000 runners including one Banana Man) and I broke the 2 hour barrier with a time of 1hour 53minutes. Not quite as significant as Roger Bannister’s sub four minute mile barrier but I’m just as pleased – or I was until Ian came right back at me in the afternoon with a 1hour 50 minute time for his!
Injuries are continuing to worry me – my left knee completely seized up on Sunday and I didn’t think I was going to complete the race! Yet more expensive trips to Osteopaths and Physio’s are on their way.

Ian - 5.4.10 - 2 carbo gels ingested, plenty of Lucozade drunk, 6 hills scaled and 20 miles has been conquered in 3 hrs 20 mins. I must say that when I reached home and stopped the stopwatch, I was a little disappointed with this time however, I still had some energy in the legs and this combined with the adrenalin and crowd encouragement on the 25th April will hopefully be enough to see me through the extra 6.2 miles without my legs falling off. I wont go so far as to say I enjoyed the 20 miles but I didn’t feel shattered and could still move afterwards so have now regained some lost confidence that I can not only complete the marathon but do so in a respectable time.

Richard - 3.4.10 - Well! A sharp lesson was learnt in Geography on my final long training run before the Marathon. I’m not sure where I was during this particular lesson at school but I now know that any run from the coast in land will involve more up hills than down! Following my 20 miler at the Sense training day round Hyde Park last week I was feeling very cocky with my ‘blistering’ time of 3h 05mins. I well and truly landed back to earth on Saturday however with a grueling up hill 22 miler from Harwich to Dedham in 4h 06mins. Perhaps Sammy Wanjiru doesn’t have too much to worry about after all.

Richard & Ian - Charity Car Wash - 1.4.10 - We took the day off work and set up a car wash station within the car park at our offices – after washing 25 cars by hand – no hosepipes involved – we were exhausted and very wet but raised over £150 so thank you to everyone who is now driving around in very smeared cars!!! – See photo evidence!

Ian 29.3.10 - Sunday started out nicely, sunny weather but not too hot and grand plans for a 18.5 mile run. All was going well until around 14 miles, even the hills weren’t too bad! Then dehydration majorly hit me. I cut short my run and struggled on for a further 2 miles and when my legs had nothing left, I had 1mile to walk home. I reached home feeling very faint and promptly threw up! I have now learnt the hard way about dehydration and don’t intend to suffer like this again! Still, the first 14 miles was good!!!! See photo evidence!!!!

Richard 21.3.10 - Longest run yet at 18 miles. Agony and still 8 miles short of the total Marathon distance….Argh! 3 hours is a long time when you’ve only got lorries trying to run you over as company.  I think I am single handedly helping the sports medical professional through the recession with every available expert within a 15 mile radius conducting daily repair work to my legs - with shin splints being a very painful!
But hey – how about this for inspiration, I ‘bumped into’ Denise Lewis OBE – Commonwealth, European and Olympic Heptathlon Champion at the TRIC awards. She is fantastic and has inspired me that I can do this!!!! See celerbity photo in album!

Ian - 19.3.10
The training has been going well, the miles are piling up, the legs are constantly aching and so a forced weekend break was a delight. It might have been a bit optimistic to take my running kit on a stag weekend to Brighton so I took Friday off work so I could squeeze in a good 10 miler. Just hoping 3 days of constant alcohol will not take it’s toll on my training programme, yeah right!!
