Charities

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Limited.
JDRF is the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research, dedicating over £1.5 billion to research projects across the globe to improve the lives of people living with the condition until we find the cure. Type 1 diabetes affects children and adults suddenly and without warning. Just to stay alive, someone with type 1 diabetes will have an endless daily regime of blood tests and multiple insulin injections or pump infusions.
Highfield Friends and Parents Association
The HFPA primarily aims to raise funds to provide equipment, facilities and activities which cannot be provided for pupils attending Highfield Special School from public funds.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

In June 2013, aged 39 I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic, leaving me insulin dependent, and requiring up to 5 injections a day, with regular blood sugar testing to manage the condition.  Since my diagnosis I’ve had a lot of help from a lot of good people at Addenbrookes and the wider diabetic community and I want to do my own thing to give something back.  I also have a rapidly approaching 40th birthday, next year and I thought it was an opportunity to do something useful and raise some money for a couple of charities.

First JDRF – a type 1 diabetes research charity (https://www.jdrf.org.uk), working to carry out basic research into causes, cures etc. and also better tools to manage diabetes day to day.  Secondly is Highfields Special School in Ely who are trying hard to raise money for a whole range of IT and other equipment specially designed to help kids who find it hard to communiocate, from special apps with big keyboards and pictograms to Eye-Gazes that can track where the child is looking and identify the icons, words etc they want to use. So far they’ve done a great job with raffles, bake sales etc. but every little helps.

My second aim, is to demonstrate to anyone out there that diabetes is something to be overcome and is not a reason to limit your ambition.

I'm going to be taking part 5 races over the next year, 366 days to be exact, starting on 31st Dec 2013, and for every one where I beat my own personal best, I’ll be donating £50 myself, so up to £250.

  • 31st Dec 2013 Ely New Year’s Eve 10k - Just missed out on this one
  • Sunday 1st June 2014 - The Yomp Mountain Challenge – a 23 mile Fell race – last year I did this in 4 hr 25 min three days before my  diagnosis. This yeay a PB by 6 minutes, 25th overall
  • 1st August 2014– 40 mile Ultramarathon at Grimsthorpe – 40 at 40, I’ve done 40 miles in 8 hours before, but think I can go quicker. I did! Although the achilles went kaputt after the Yomp, I still completed this and came in 13th overall, in 7hr 52
  • September – Half Marathon, a local one and a flat course in the Fens. Should be good for a fast time, current PB 1:42:24.  Just about equalled it on a very hot, very windy day.
  • 31st Dec 2014 back to Ely Runners New Year’s Eve 10k –
