Charity

The Whitehawk Inn
The Whitehawk Inn, is a Brighton based, award winning charity, has been chosen as one of only six Official Local Charities for the 2012 Brighton Marathon. The Whitehawk Inn, current holder of The Argus Appeal’s ‘Charity of the Year ‘and Brighton & Hove Council’s ‘Best Community Initiative’ awards, works tirelessly to offer those residents of Brighton & Hove who have, for some reason, ‘lost their way’ or are ‘searching for a new direction’ every chance possible to find their new life. As a community led organisation, the charity’s dedicated and passionate workforce provide information and advice about learning and work, offering a range of support activities for adults. The Centre itself is a bright, local community hub that provides visitors and learners with an inspirational environment in which to spend time with people who genuinely want to help them to move forward. In just over a decade, The Whitehawk Inn has helped more than 7,400 people. 70% of whom live in an area of deprivation and 92% have known barriers to participation that result in social exclusion, poverty, low educational attainment and skill levels, poor work prospects, poor health and family breakdown. Inside just three years The Whitehawk Inn supported 200 people back to work and thus resulted in a reported improvement in their quality of life, including increased self-confidence, motivation and a feeling of being more connected to others in the community.

Carl Patterson is 31 years old. He grew up in the local area and moved to Brighton 13 years ago; where he got his first job as croupier (He swears he’s no gambler!) He loves living in the City and enjoys its diverse culture and atmosphere. He keeps fit, enjoys sci-fi and action movies and generally just loves to socialise (Party Animal? yes!)

Carl has worked for the Mears Group for just over a year and has proudly declared that it is a ‘Great’ place to work! He recently attended a Mears sponsored event; The Sussex Writers Awards (which was held in aid of The Whitehawk Inn) at The Grand Hotel, which he described as being ‘dead posh! When asked what inspired Carl to run in the Brighton Marathon, he said “At the event, I was inspired by a short film showing the worthwhile community work of The Whitehawk Inn; helping people return to work, some who lacked confidence, some with no recent training etc and all these issues were addressed and more...So much so, I have decided to run the Brighton Marathon in April 2012, to raise funds for this incredible charity...”

Big thank-you to these three people who sponsored me on a page we had to close:
