Head First
Headfirst supports research into head injuries, stroke and associated brain damage. The human brain weighs approximately 14oz and is the most complex structure known to man. Most of us take our brain for granted. We don’t give it a second thought, until we get a headache. But when a head injury or stroke occurs, the victims and their loved ones suddenly realise just how delicate, vulnerable and mysterious the brain is. And just how little we know about it. Set up by three people who have all had first hand experience of head injuries and illness, HeadFirst is a charitable organisation dedicated to the funding and promotion of research into head injuries, stroke and associated brain damage.

Hello from me, Cheryl Baker!

Thank  you so much for supporting me on this, my first ever (and possibly my last!) marathon. Actually, I enjoyed it so much I think I'll probably do next year too. Did I just say that?! No seriously, it was an amazing experience on a glorious day and, although there were times I wanted to give up, the crowd and the knowledge that I had your support kept me going.

I didn't realise training to run 26.2 miles was so......flippin' hard! But I committed myself to do it and I did - in 5 hours 19.45 minutes. Not bad for an old bird!

But it's not really about the race, is it? It's about raising money for a charity close to your heart and in this year's Virgin London Marathon, thousands, probably millions will be raised for worthy causes.

My own worthy cause which has always been close to my own heart is Headfirst.

Headfirst was set up shortly after Bucks Fizz had a near-fatal coach crash back in December 1984. My lovely, lovely friend and colleague, Mike Nolan, almost lost his life after developing a blood clot on the brain following the crash.  Headfirst was my way of thanking the medical profession for saving him. Purely selfish reasons, I know!

Headfirst doesn't have a big London office, it doesn't have overheads, it doesn't have paid staff. It is a purely voluntarily-run charity, which means every penny of every donation goes to helping with research and care of brain-injured patients, whether through road traffic accident, stroke or disease.

Thank you so very much on behalf of Headfirst and me, Cheryl Baker. You are special! xxxx

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.
