If you've arrived at this page it's because I need your help. I'm running the London Marathon (all 26 miles of it hopefully!) in April 2014 and I aim to raise over £1650 for Mental Health Foundation along the way.

New Target £5000 - lets aim high: we hit the initial £1650 target after only 2 days! I'm blown away. Thanks so much to everyone for their support.

Why Mental Health Foundation?

Less than 2 years ago (in February 2012) my brother Steve took his own life. He was 30.

He was a very successful businessman who'd provided his family with a wonderful lifestyle and truly beautiful homes. He adored his two children, who were the apples of his eye and, following the breakdown of his marriage, he'd found love again in the shape of Nicole. He was a world renowned vlogger in the Motorbiking and Geocaching community - going under the moniker Sven or Svengalie - and he earned himself so many thousands of friends nationally and internationally along the way. The photos section shows some of his happiest moments - some only months or weeks before his death.

However, the divorce proceedings following his marriage breakdown got too much for him and he decided that his only way out was to take his own life. Leaving his children, girlfriend, family and friends, online and offline, devasted.

I'll never understand why, with so much going for him, he chose to end it all. It's only since by looking back, I've really had to come to terms with how utterly depressed he must have been and how well he hid it from all of us, even his closest friends, those he should have been able to share anything with.

What drives a man with so much going for him to get so low? How do we recognise the symptoms of depression and mental illness in our closest friends and relatives? How can people recognise it themselves and get treatment before it's too late? How do we remove the stigma from mental illness and allow people to talk freely about what they are going through? I hope that by raising money for Mental Health Foundation these answers, and many more, will have more of a chance of being answered.

Mental Health Foundation help people to survive, recover from and prevent mental health problems. They do this by:

  • carrying out research
  • developing practical solutions for better mental health services
  • campaigning to reduce stigma and discrimination
  • promoting better mental health for us all.

So help me to get through the next 6 months and 650 miles training by giving a donation to help me on the way to my target.
