The National Railway Museum is the largest railway museum in the world and the most visited English museum outside of London. As a National Museum entrance to the museum is free. We receive a grant from the Department of Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) which goes towards basic running costs e.g heating; lighting etc. However with your help we can be a world-class museum where people from all walks of life will choose to explore how railways help shape our world.

Run for Flying Scotsman
A group of us who work at the National Railway Museum in York can’t wait to see our favourite locomotive – Flying Scotsman – back in steam. We really wanted to do our bit so we are trying to raise as much money as we can to help with her restoration.
To do this we’ve decided to run York’s Jane Tomlinson 10k on August 1st. Not content with running alone, we’ve come up with the mad idea of doing it attached to each other dressed up as – you guessed it – Flying Scotsman.
This challenge is going to be really tough, but our determination to see our well-loved locomotive back on the main line will hopefully get us through.
The NRM bought Flying Scotsman for the nation in 2004 assisted by many supportive organisations and the generosity of the general public. Now the engine is undergoing a major overhaul so the national treasure can return to the mainline once again – and we can’t wait to see her in steam next summer!
