Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research
Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research is the only charity in the UK dedicated exclusively to researching blood cancers and disorders including leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and other lymphomas, and myeloma.
Encephalitis Society
The Encephalitis Society is a UK based charity with worldwide links that aims to improve the quality of life of all people affected directly and indirectly by encephalitis. Encephalitis is an often life-threatening illness caused by infection, usually viral, or by autoimmune diseases affecting the brain. Survivors are left with an acquired brain injury, the degree and severity of which will vary. The resultant difficulties may include cognitive, physical, emotional or behavioural consequences. The Encephalitis Society provides support to adults and children affected, their families and carers; produces evidence based information on all aspects of the condition in printed, electronic, video and audio formats; raises awareness about the condition and its subsequent problems among professionals, statutory agencies and the general public; conducts research and works in partnership with other researchers and their establishments. If you want to find out more about our work please visit our website at www.encephalitis.info or get in touch with us on 01653692583.

Tim Bond, Managing Director of National Recruitment Agency Upfront & Personnel first decided that he needed a new challenge for 2011 having been unable to dedicate much time to the Encephalitis Society in 2010.  As a Corporate Sponsor and Regional Representative of The Encephalitis Society Tim has actively worked to raise both funds and awareness of this life-changing illness.

The idea for a kayak challenge had been in the back of Tim's mind for a while but became crystallised while talking to Gareth Allen, a Personal Trainer and a Partner in Physio2Fit. The idea quickly hatched in to a full-blown plan and within days team member were being chosen and strategies, goals and preparations made.

The first part of the challenge, to kayak around the Isle of Wight has been done before and so we're not breaking any records, the distance of this challenge is approximately 80 to 85 miles and we aim to complete this over 3 days.

Day1 we are aiming to leave Southampton Boast Show and we anticipate completing 17 miles finishing at Ryde. Day2 32 miles from Ryde to Freshwater and finally from Freshwater round the Needles and back to Southampton Boat Show on Day3 which is 30 miles.

The team have chosen two charities whose work is nothing short of amazing and aim to raise, through sponsorship and donation, significant sums of money for these good causes.

The Encephalitis Society is a UK based charity set up by people affected by encephalitis in 1994.

The Encephalitis Society is a registered charity and the only resource of its kind in the world.  The Society provides direct support and information to people affected by Encephalitis in the UK and Ireland.  Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain caused by infection (usually viral) or by autoimmune disease.  Encephalitis is indiscriminate, striking adults and children alike, showing no respect for age, gender, ethnicity or culture.  Mortality rates are high and many of those who survive are left with an acquired brain injury, the degree and severity of which will vary.  An Independent Audit in 2005 concluded that for those who contacted the Society it was a "light in a very dark place" and a co-charity in the sector recently described us as a 'charity that punches above its weight'.

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Our life-saving research is focused on finding causes, improving diagnosis and treatments, and running groundbreaking clinical trials for all blood cancer patients.

Blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma affect people of all ages from babies to grandparents. We need to be sure that we reach all those touched by leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and give them the best possible chance of survival.
