Colin Rule running the Marathon Des Sables

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/colinrule

I HAVE NOW COMPLETED THE TOUGHEST FOOTRACE IN THE WORLD AND I CAN TELL YOU ALL IT WAS BRUTAL, HARD, HOT AND PAINFULL. I SHOULD BE BACK ON MY FEET AND FULLY RECHARGED IN A WEEK OR 2.

CAN I JUST THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT WITH THE CHARITY AND ALL YOUR WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT. THE EMAILS THAT WERE SENT TO ME DURING THE RACE HELPED ME MAKE IT THROUGH AND IM HUMBLED BY ALL YOUR KIND WORDS. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN AND I CAN NEVER THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR MAKING IT SO WORTHWHILE.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed direct to Asthma UK. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

My name is Colin Rule I am 42yrs old and live in Southampton with my wife and 2 children. I have suffered with Asthma and Eczema from birth which meant I couldn't do sports and spent a lot of my life on medication. I was told I would never run a cross country race but with medication and self control I managed to reduce my symptoms. I have since played semi professional football, spent 8 years as a Royal Marine Commando and raced in triathlons for Hampshire Police. I have remained active and I have been lucky enough to only have mild symptoms since the age of 17.

I lost my cousin, aged 18, to Asthma  some years ago and 2 members of my family currently suffer with Asthma. I am sure you know or have relatives that have Asthma and the research and support Asthma UK give is invaluable.

I have a place on the 2012 Marathon Des Sables:

The Toughest footrace in the World (www.saharamarathon.co.uk)

It covers 243km/151 miles (in sections similar to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over 6 days - equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons.  In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc), this can be in excess of 10kg. Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.

You will have to prepare all your own food throughout the race and  there is not a chain of Tesco stores or corner grocery shops dotted around the Sahara. You will experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F, of running on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as 15 - 20% of the distance being in sand dunes.

The heat, distance and rubbing will trash your feet and may cause severe trauma, mental stamina probably constitutes at least 50% of whether you will complete the distance or not, don't underestimate the mental stress that you need to endure. On the 4th day, you will set off across the barren wilderness to complete a 54 mile stage. Few people complete this before dark that evening and some will not come in till after dark the next night. This is followed by the 42km Marathon stage!! It’s tough and this is why it is known as the toughest foot race in the world. Even if you have run dozens of 26 mile marathons, this does not mean that you will automatically find the MdS easy - either way i have been training for over a year in preparation for the MdS.

I have self funded the entry fee and equipment and have been training and planning for this event for over 18 months. I  want every penny raised in sponsorship to go to Asthma Uk for the research and support they provide for others.

I know times are tough  but please would you donate whatever you can and help all those who are suffering from Asthma.

Please follow me on my journey during the race. My race number is 518. Enter my details and you can see my progress and watch the webcam.
