The Childrens Trust
The Children's Trust is a national charity providing a unique combination of care, therapy and education to some of the UK’s most severely disabled children. Some of these children have been born with disabilities and some have suffered a brain injury as the result of a tragic accident or illness. Most cannot walk or talk, and have impaired hearing or vision or both. Many cannot swallow and require feeding by tube and some cannot breathe independently

Hello,

This year I shall be running the Virgin London Marathon on 22nd April in aid of The Children’s Trust.

The Children’s Trust is a national charity providing intensive rehabilitation to children from anywhere in the UK who may have suffered a brain injury as a result of a tragic accident or serious illness.
(Find out more about the charity here and ways to get involved - thechildrenstrust.org.uk)

I recently visited the Trust, in Tadworth, Surrey. It was a poignant visit for me, having suffered a serious brain injury myself in 2010 when I was struck from behind by a truck whilst cycling for Race across America. Whilst I was coming to terms with my injury, I was provided with the care and support that I, and my family, needed. The Trust does just that for children and families, who have had their lives turned upside down by a brain injury.

During my visit to the Trust, I was lucky enough to meet 23 year old Alfie Russell, who was himself severely injured when he was knocked off his bike at the age of 9. Alfie went on to make a remarkable recovery at The Children’s Trust and has since run the Virgin London Marathon, climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and made numerous speeches about his experience of living with a brain injury in aid of the Trust.

It was inspirational to see the work that goes on at The Children’s Trust and to meet all the children who are working so hard in their rehabilitation. When I’m running the Virgin London Marathon, the inspirational children, their amazing parents and the phenomenal staff who work alongside them will never be far from my thoughts.

The Children’s Trust is the 2012 charity partner of BMW UK, for whom I am an ambassador. I will be running as part of the ‘BMW Performance Team’ alongside 18 BMW employees, who will be joining me in fundraising as much as possible for the Trust. In addition there will be over 100 people running for the Trust including Tim, whose daughter Holly came to The Children’s Trust following a serious road traffic accident. When entering the Trust Holly was only just about able to sit up on her own, seven months later with the expert care and therapy provided; Holly is now able to walk short distances unaided and has made great progress in many other areas.

The Trust also provides invaluable support for the children’s families and I know firsthand how vital this is. It’s great to have the opportunity to raise funds for them so they can continue changing children’s lives.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page and any support your able to give will make a real difference to children, and families, who have had their lives turned upside down by a brain injury.

You can also donate by texting JCLM£10 (Amount between £1 and £10) to 70070.

All the best,

James
