Charity
Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions. Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) aims to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young. By supporting CRY you will help save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions. For more information please contact CRY on 01737 363 222 or cry@c-r-y.org.uk

Crawl-4-CRY's fundraising page
On Tuesday 14th September 2010, we began a 6 day endurance crawl through Lincolnshire in order to raise money for the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). This is a highly relevant charity to both of us. Thanks to a free heart-screening clinic provided by CRY at Loughborough, a previously undiagnosed heart abnormality was detected in Mark, potentially saving his life. Unfortunately, one of Kev’s schoolmates was not so lucky and passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condition in 2008 aged just 19.
We aimed to crawl 23 miles from Scotter to Lincoln in the first 5 days of the trip and finish with a day crawling around Lincoln city centre to raise further money and awareness for the charity. As we set off from Scotter at 8am on Tuesday 14th September, we realised just how slow progress would be as we covered the first 2 miles in approximately 3 hours. However, it turned out that this was the fastest pace of the whole trip! After 11 hours crawling and just over 5 miles covered, we were satisfied with progress at the end of day one.
Unfortunately midway through the second day, the reoccurrence of an old knee injury forced Mark to walk. This turned out to be a blessing however, as Mark took on the role of chaperoning Kev for the remainder of the challenge and keeping him safe from heavy traffic. Without this, we would have had a high chance of being struck by traffic.
We continued through Lincolnshire, spending approximately 11 hours each day progressing through fields and along roadsides. At approximately 4.30pm on Saturday 18th September, Kev made it to the Lincoln sign on the B1398 after 23 miles of crawling. Despite enduring many injuries to his knees and knuckles along the way, Kev had made it to Lincoln.
On Sunday Mark rejoined Kev for a final day of crawling around Lincoln city with friends and family also joining them to perform a street collection. This street collection alone raised a total of £415.20.
Both of us were overwhelmed by the generosity of people on the Lincolnshire roadside during the event, which inspired us to complete the demanding challenge. Local residents were kind enough to offer us food and drink during our journey and we were even invited to attend a school garden party at a local primary school and received a free burger and drink!
We wish to give a special mention to the Downy family who provided us with food, accommodation and so much more during our trip. A big thank you must also be given to those who travelled to Lincoln on the final day to help with the street collection.
