Cecily's Fund
Cecily’s Fund helps Zambian children, who have been orphaned or made vulnerable as a result of HIV and AIDS, to get an education. Education is one of the most effective weapons in the battle against HIV, giving children vital information, support from teachers and friends and skills to help them earn a living after school. We enable nearly 10,000 children to go to school by providing uniforms, shoes, books, pens and other equipment, and paying school and exam fees. Once they graduate, we help some of them train as teachers and peer health educators so they can pass on life giving education to thousands more youngsters. For more information see our website www.cecilysfund.org.

Hello friends,

On the 22nd of April 2012, one week before my 30th birthday, I will be running 26 miles and 385 yards around London. This is a very long way, I believe the kids these days are calling it a "marathon". Obviously I would not be doing this unless I had a really good reason, and that reason is a charity called Cecily's Fund.

This incredible charity works with partner organisations in Zambia to support vulnerable children, especially those who have been orphaned by AIDS.  Cecily's Fund helps to provide schooling (including meals and uniforms) for these children in Kitwe and Lusaka, as well as health education to slow the spread of the disease. The charity makes a commitment to support each child that they take on right to the end of his or her school career. The Fund also supports young people in Zambia training to be teachers themselves.

As many of you know (but most of you don't), Cecily Eastwood was head girl at my school when I was 13, and was quite a remarkable person. On her gap year Cecily went to Kitwe, Zambia to volunteer for a charity helping children orphaned by AIDS. Tragically, she died in a road accident just months later, and in 1998, Cecily's parents set up Cecily's Fund in her memory.

This is important: Cecily's Fund is a very small charity, with just three full-time and three part-time staff in addition to their trustees. They only receive ONE guaranteed charity place in the London Marathon every FOUR YEARS. They have been offered this special place in 2012 because two years ago their runner raised a whopping £27,000 for the charity! I have set a slightly more conservative target of £3,000 but I still need you all to dig deep and give whatever you can to help me reach this target. As I'm sure you can appreciate it is an honour and a huge responsibility to be running on their only London Marathon place in 2012.

I will also be organising a couple of fundraising events over the coming months, and if anyone would like to get involved with these that would be hugely appreciated, so I will be in touch when I have more details. Meanwhile, if you'd like to read more about the amazing work Cecily's Fund does you can read all about them on their website www.cecilysfund.org

Thank you so much for reading and please give generously.
