Charity

National Autistic Society
The National Autistic Society is the UK's leading charity for people affected by Autism. Over half a million people in the UK have autism. Together with their families they make up over two million people whose lives are touched by autism every single day. Despite this, autism is still relatively unknown and misunderstood. Which means that many of these two million people get nothing like the level of help, support and understanding they need. Together, we are going to change this.

Hi, thanks for visiting my page. I've long harboured an ambition to complete a marathon before my battered body gives up the ghost and so, earlier this year I entered the ballot for a slot in the 2013 London Marathon.

And blow me if I went and won a place! On the assumption that the more people I tell, the more likely it is that I'll stick to the training and get through it, I'll now be telling all and sundry about this so your support and encouragement is essential.

Those who know me will be rightly amazed that I'm doing this. Not only am I not really the fitness type, I fractured my spine in an accident twenty years back and sport an impresive collection of metalwork around my lower spine as a result.  Two years ago I had corrective surgery to resolve an issue with my right leg, which had been left short as a result of the same accident. That involved it being re-fractured and then pinned in a frame and stretched over the course of a year. So all in all I'm delighted that I'm able to take up the challenge at all.

I've chosen the National Autistic Society as the charity that will benefit from any funds I can raise.  Although not directly affected by this disablilty, my wife is a Transitional Social Worker supporting those who are and I know full well how difficult it can be, both for those who have the condition and for those who care for them.

You can easily sponsor me, all donations will be quickly processed and passed to the National Autistic Society. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Darren Griffin, Sept 2012
