YMCA London South West
YMCA London South West (Formerly Kingston & Wimbledon YMCA) is committed to putting Christian principles into action through programmes that build a healthy body, mind and spirit for all. We are passionate in our desire to respond to the needs of the local community and in growing people. Operating from five main sites, our diverse work comprises supporting residents in our hostels to build a future, running youth projects and offering a vibrant children’s programme, where we cater for some of the most deprived children in the area. Our restaurants are open to the public and are especially popular with senior citizens for whom we also provide a variety of activities, and our affordable gyms aim to cater for all needs.

Help me to raise money for a disabled chair hoist for Hampton Pool!

Hello!

Thank you for sponsoring me!  This is an exciting challenge that i have been training for for 2 years now!  It all started when I became an Open water swimmer in 2005 when I went on a swimming holiday to Greece that May.  the following September I swam the length of Lake Windermere and then in August 2006 I swam the English Channel.

I have always loved swimming and being asthmatic I have found it very therapeutic.  I have found swimming outdoors helps me greatly.  Due to this I have developed a passion for open air pools.  I live near Hampton Pool and have been working at the pool for 5 years.  I consider it to be a tranquil paradise within busy London.  The pool was saved from closure in the 1980's by local people, now it is a charity managed by YMCA London South West and Hampton Pool Trust.  Whilst other Lidos are still being shut down this one is getting stronger every year and is a fantastic facility for the local community.  Due to this I thought that if I was going to do a crazy event then someone should benefit, therefore I hope to raise money to pay for a disabled chair hoist so that the pool can be accessible to the whole community.

I have been training hard for the past 18 months using pools and open water.  I am hoping to swim the Strait within 11 hours.

This challenge is a big one for me, I am not a fast swimmer and will never break any speed records, however when I realised that I could be the first British female to swim the Strait (others have tried) I saw this as a chance to set a record!

64 people have been successful since 1962, it has a high failure rate due to strong tides, unpredicatable weather and cold water (wetsuits are not allowed).  Because I am not a fast swimmer this is what makes it more challenging for me-can I get accross before the tides or weather changes?  If my speed is not constant it could cause my swim to be terminated due to the reasons mentioned above.

I will have to maintain my 2.5 Km/hour pace for the 11 hours!

I am trying not to think about the sharks and the Jelly Fish, so now you know what it is all about, please give generously to help spur me across the rough water!

Many Thanks

Emily
