Running the London Marathon for Bliss

In March last year, my son, Eddie, arrived five and a half weeks early weighing just 4lbs 1oz. Because Eddie was early and small, he spent 27 days in the Neonatal Unit at Stepping Hill Hospital. During this time, Eddie needed help feeding, keeping warm, as well as phototherapy for jaundice. It was a time full of ups and downs, and for each two steps forward there was often a step backwards too. At one point, Eddie was down to just 3lbs 11oz. Eventually, he started coping with the milk better and putting on weight. Although still small for his age, Eddie is now a happy and healthy baby and growing fast!

I'm running the London Marathon for a charity called Bliss. Bliss is a charity that specialises in the support and care of premature and sick babies. Through their campaiging work, they have driven up the standards of care in NHS neonatal units. They provide invaluable information for parents in neonatal units - leaflets, booklets, info DVDs, support groups - that parents can access when they need it most. These really helped us understand and come to terms with Eddie's condition.

Bliss aims to provide a specialist Bliss nurse in each neonatal unit throught the UK. The roles of Bliss nurses is to provide direct support to parents during this extremely distressing period, taking the time to be with parents that NHS nurses simply cannot due to their workload. Steppng Hill did not have a dedicated Bliss nurse and I really feel this would have been a huge help to Eddie and ourselvses if they did.

The marathon is going to be a huge challenge for me. I'm not a particularly fit person and I'm most definitely not a runner! But that's why I've chosen to run the London Marathon - it's going to be really tough and I hope to raise vital funds for Bliss to help get me through the pain. Please donate genrously to help Bliss to continue the great work that they do.

Thank you.
