ICUsteps
The Intensive Care Unit Support Teams for Ex-Patients (ICUsteps) was founded in 2005 by ex-patients, their relatives and ICU staff to support patients and their families through the long road to recovery from critical illness. Our aims are to: - support patients and relatives affected by critical illness, - promote recognition of the physical and psychological consequences of critical illness through education of the medical profession and the general public, and - encourage research into treatment and the prevention of these issues.

Supporting those who survive intensive care

Thank you for visiting our page. We know you are all bombarded with sponsorship requests, and we'd like to be upfront with you that we're after your cash and the blurb below is designed to make you give as much as you can, so please dig deep and feel good.

We're five guys aiming to compete in (or should that say aiming to complete?) their first triathlon. We've been accused of having a collective mid-life crisis and of buying all the gear with no idea. Both largely true.

But we're also raising money for a charity called ICUSteps. Why? One of our team was unlucky enough to get a bad dose of man-flu 3 years ago and foolishly find his way onto an intensive care unit (two to be precise - no half measures), both in Oxford.

You can read about his experience here: http://www.icusteps.org/patients/patient-experiences/anthony

Now that you've read that and possibly others on the ICUSteps website you'll understand how vital it is that people who have been through intensive care are properly supported both physically and mentally after they leave the unit and get home. Not surprisingly, the NHS doesn't have the resources to do this. So, unless someone has private healthcare and access to people who know how to deal with the ramifications of an extended period on an intensive care unit (and there aren't many of those people around), they will be left to fend for themselves and to try to make sense of what they've been through with very little support.

ICUSteps is a very small charity seeking to fill this gap. Because they are small, the impact of your donations will be that much greater. Their main objective is to connect former patients and ICU professionals with recent patients, in order to help the latter group cope with the physical and mental stress of recovering from what they have been through. You can read more about the superb and relatively unknown work that they do here: http://icusteps.org/

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to ICUSteps directly.  As you probably know, Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on ICUSteps' behalf if you're eligible for this.

We will really appreciate any donations you feel able to make.

Just please don't make them dependent upon all of us (or should that be any of us?) finishing...

With our heartfelt thanks for taking the time to read this.

Best wishes,

Anthony, Laurence, Lucien, Oli and Teddy
