Shelter
Shelter is a charity that works to alleviate the distress caused by homelessness and bad housing. We do this by giving advice, information and advocacy to people in housing need, and by campaigning for lasting political change to end the housing crisis for good.

Greg Young Managing Director of Intercounty feels so passionately about helping the homeless that he and his team slept rough for Shelter at the beginning of June. So far they have managed to raise just over £4,000 but they still need to raise more in order to make a real impact into the lives of people who are forced to live on the streets.

Throughout the night the ten fold team who slept in 3 different locations including Sawbridgeworth, Bishop’s Stortford and Great Dunmow tweeted their experience:

“We are so impressed with people’s generosity, Extra motivation.”

“Great Dunmow Intercounty have just had lovely chip butties donated by a lovely resident! And they put money in the pot too!”

Martin says “The worst feelin rite now is boredom’’ “Cant express how I feel in words” “Time does not seem 2 pass”

“Can’t bring myself to accept gifts as feel a fraud”

“Result! Pizza Express manager just bought out 2 pizzas’ we checked and he confirmed he would do the same 4 homeless.”

“Really bored and cold, Birds are starting to chirp, not so sure there are 60 seconds in a minute!”

“We made it! Congratulations and well done to everyone who helped raise this money for Shelter...we are lucky enough to now have a home 2 go2”

Without exception all of them said they would sleep rough again, to support the homeless.

Greg Young, Managing Director of Intercounty stated: ‘One of the most shocking things was the way time stands still - it’s scary on the streets, I got a real sense of how it must feel sleep rough for a long time, as even after a 24 hour period I really noticed the way in which some people reacted to us. Some were scared, others I felt looked down on me. I really got a sense of how this could impact negatively on my self-esteem long-term.’

So what’s next for Intercounty?

Some of the team are expressing the desire to repeat the exercise but anonymously and for a longer period of time. Others are driven to keep the momentum going and schedule more events in the next 12 months in order to raise a total of £20,000 for Shelter.
