Educating girls and women is widely recognised as the single most powerful weapon in the fight against poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since 1993, Camfed has been supporting girls through school in some of the poorest rural areas of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania and Malawi. More than 1,940,700 children have benefitted from Camfed's programme of educational support, helping them to leave behind a life of poverty. Find out more about Camfed's work at http://www.camfed.org.

Isis Olympic Challenge - Sam & Corne Vermaak
Update: A massive thank you to everyone who so generously supported us with their time, enthusiasm and sponsorship to help us with our Olympic Challenge. We successfully competed against each other in 22 of the 26 Olympic sports, with Corné taking victory 12-10 over Sam. The money we've raised for CAMFED will go a long way towards helping girls in Africa stay in school and receive an education that can change their lives. Thanks so much, and you can see our Challenge in more detail, including photos and videos, on our blog: www.isisolympicchallenge.wordpress.com.
----------------
Corné and Sam Vermaak, husband and wife, are taking up an Olympic Challenge – and we’d love your help!
To raise money to help keep girls in school in Africa, we’re going to take each other on in as many of the 26 official Olympic sports as possible before the London 2012 Paralympics Closing Ceremony (Sept 9th). The winner of each sport gets a gold medal, the loser merely silver, and the events will tally up on a medal board just like the true Olympics to find the overall champion.
The sports range from archery to aquatics, from handball to horse-riding. Essentially we're doing a triathlon, running a 10k race - and doing a further 24 sports matches/races against each other!
Please sponsor us on this page and raise our profile by sharing our challenge with your friends and encouraging them to sponsor us too. You can follow how we're doing on our blog: www.isisolympicchallenge.wordpress.com and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/IsisOlympicChallenge.
Why help us fundraise?
We're raising money to give girls in Africa the chance to stay in education. Education is key to helping people help themselves out of poverty, but while 70% of people in poverty worldwide are female, girls are less likely to be able to attend school than boys (around 1/4 of girls in developing countries are not in school). Evidence has shown that educating girls means they:
- will earn 25% more income as women
- are 3x less likely to get HIV
- are less likely to be trafficked
- are likely to marry later and have fewer, healthier children
- are less likely to die in childbirth (worldwide, pregnancy/childbirth is the biggest killer of girls aged 15-19)
- have skills to fall back on if they are widowed or divorced
- will reinvest 90% of their extra income back into their families and communities for items such as education or medicine for their children
An education gives a girl options, independence, a financial future – and value in her society. We have a lot of privileges as women in the UK: education, the right to choose who we marry and when, excellent maternal health care... and it is crucial that we help women who are not as fortunate improve their situation [you can read more about these issues on www.isisgivinggroup.wordpress.com/].
Why Camfed?
Since 1993 Camfed has worked to fight poverty and HIV by educating girls and empowering women in five African countries. They have improved the school environment for 1,451,600 children, provided scholarships for 47,810 girls to go to high school, trained 4,878 teacher mentors, and helped 1,027 young women go to college – and their alumni have formed their own local philanthropic group, CAMA, which continues the movement and has helped 161,300 children go to school itself.
Any amount of Great British pounds goes a long way in Africa so we appreciate any sponsorship you can spare:
£5 – Provides a girl with school supplies – pack of notebooks, pens and pencils
£15 – Provides a girl with one pair of school shoes to be able to walk to school and back
£25 – Provides a girl with a complete school uniform (no uniform=no attendance)
£30 – Keeps two girls in primary school for a year, providing emergency supplies through our emergency Safety Net Fund
£180 – Sends a girl to secondary school for a year. Her bursary package includes school fees, uniform, shoes, books, and school supplies
So join us in our battle for spousal sporting supremacy, and poverty annihilation - by sponsoring our efforts, and maybe even joining in too!
Thanks for helping us :)
