National Deaf Children's Society
The National Deaf Children's Society: There are 35,000 deaf children in the UK and three more are born deaf every day. Many deaf children struggle to communicate with their immediate family, and develop language at a slower rate than their hearing peers. This can lead to them feeling isolated and excluded. The National Deaf Children's Society is dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people by providing emotional and practical support to them and their families through services like our Freephone Helpline and our network of trained support workers.

Jan's running for Every Deaf Child

I am running the London Marathon on 23rd April 2017 for the National Deaf Children's Society so it can go on providing essential support to deaf children and their families throughout the UK because EVERY deaf child deserves the right to flourish and not get left behind.

Our second son Joseph was born in 2007 and following the newborn hearing test, was diagnosed as being profoundly deaf in his left ear with only a very small amount of hearing in his right ear. He was fitted with a hearing aid at 13 weeks old. We were told it was unlikely that he would ever have "normal"speech and would need lots of support.

When we found out, we were in shock and emotional. Why us? There's no history. What did we do wrong? We didn't know anything about deafness or what that would mean for Joseph or our family.

4 babies are born deaf every day in the UK, 90% of them to hearing parents who don't have any experience of dealing with deafness. This was the case with us and there was very little help and support until we turned to the NDCS. They were there with so much amazing help and information from free weekends for newly diagnosed families to helplines and even local officers always ready to answer your queries and concerns.

Joseph is 9 now and we are pleased and proud to say he is a fantastic hearing aid user. He attends the same school as his brothers, plays rugby for Old Brods, has age appropriate speech and language and is consistently in the top part of his class of hearing children. What more could we ask for ?

Thank you NDCS for giving our family the support and strength we needed when there was nobody else to turn to and we needed it most.

Thank you - We appreciate you reading this to understand why this special charity is close to our hearts. Please give as generously as you can.
