Hi, thanks for visiting our page. Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Little Hearts Matter charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.

Starting in July this year Joe, my youngest son who is 15 years old, and I will cycle from John O Groats to Lands End.  We are planning on completing the ride in 12 days, and will do so unsupported, a total distance of nearly 1000 miles.  Our chosen charities are the Royal British Legion and Little Hearts Matter.

As an ex-serviceman I have a personal interest in the work and values which the Legion represents.  The legion is now busier than ever.  The charity provides help and welfare to the serving and ex-Service community and their families.  The demand for the support from the Royal British Legion continues at a fast pace.

The charity Little Hearts Matter is one which I had not heard of until very recently.  Our friend’s child, Charlie who is 7 years old and lives in our village was born with a heart defect, known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).    There are approximately 600 children diagnosed with this condition each year.  Little Hearts Matter is a national charity offering support and information to anyone affected by the devastating diagnosis of a single ventricle heart condition, children born with half a working heart. It works to raise awareness of the needs of these children and their families.

Training has already started on our new road bikes, especially selected for the ride.  We both have identical bikes; therefore any spares we carry can be interchangeable.  As the ride is unassisted, we will carry all our equipment.   We intend to stay in B&B accommodation and treat ourselves to the occasional hotel along the way.

Planning the ride is still work in progress.  However, I can report the adventure will be loosely based on driving a hire car from Stithians in Cornwall to Scotland departing on 26 July, overnight south of Glasgow, then drop the hire car off at Inverness.  A private taxi van will take us to the start line at John O Groats which is a further 130 miles further north from Inverness.  The ride will take us through the Great Glen past Loch Ness, Loch Lomand and down to Glasgow.   From here we head south east to the border with England.  This will be the half way mark so a celebration beer will be the order of the day.  We will pass the Lake District on our right towards the industrial conurbation between Manchester and Liverpool.  We will be grateful of the quieter lanes of Cheshire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire as hopefully will have cleared the busy roads to the north, and enjoy the route through places like the Wye Valley, over the old Severn Bridge and into the West Country.  The route then takes us south of Exmoor, through the rolling hills of Devon and onwards through home ground and on to the finish line at Lands End for a real pasty and a pint or 2 or 3………

If you are able to make a contribution, no matter how small, you can make a difference.  Thank you very much Joe & Jerry
