Cystic Fibrosis Trust
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK's only national charity dealing with all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis. It funds research to treat the symptoms of CF and to find an effective treatment. It also aims to ensure appropriate healthcare for those with Cystic Fibrosis and provides information, advice and support to people with CF and their families across the UK. Cystic Fibrosis is one of the most common, life-threatening diseases in the UK. It affects over 9,000 people and 1 in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis. If two carriers start a family, each child has a 1 in 4 chance of having Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus making it hard to breathe and to digest food. People with Cystic Fibrosis have to endure a rigorous daily treatment regime including physiotherapy to clear the chest, inhaled and injected drugs to thin the mucus and fight infections and dozens of enzyme pills to help digest food. Each week, five babies are born with CF and sadly, each week three young lives are lost. Only half of those with Cystic Fibrosis are likely to live past their late 30s, but a baby born today can expect to live longer. We seek to continually improve standards of care for people with CF; we commission cutting-edge clinical and scientific research; and provide practical and accurate information to people with CF and their families. None of this would be possible without the support of the CF community and the generosity of the public.

My page:

Hello and thanks for visiting our fundraising page for the Brighton Marathon, raising money for the CF Trust.

We are a group of (very!) amateur runners who have come together to take on the toughest race we could think of, the 2014 Brighton Marathon!! The first question that comes to mind is why?? Well there is one person in our group who has an amazing story and for whom the rest of us are running; some of us to support, others because we wanted the challenge alongside her, and finally the small group who stupidly said they would do it if she ever did!!

Amanda was born with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and has been battling this inherited illness her whole life. In 2010 her health deteriorated she and became completely reliant on the oxygen 24/7 and by May 2012 she was on the list for a double-lung transplant. On September 29th 2012, Amanda was lucky enough to receive a lifesaving transplant.

Just over a year on and Amanda’s health has improved dramatically and she is ready to take on a challenge that she has wanted to achieve for a number of years… the marathon and we, her team will be right alongside her to complete this fantastic goal.

Unfortunately many people with CF are not as lucky as Amanda and never get to have a second chance. Basic CF care is always improving with the aim of maintaining a life as healthy as possible. We hope people never get to the point of ill health that Amanda did, and with the help of the CF Trust putting money into care and gene therapy research, a major trial is currently underway. That work, has only been possible through the generosity and support of people like you, for which, all of us at Just Breathe, and CF sufferers, thank you very much.
