Childrens Hospice South West
At Children’s Hospice South West we help and support children and their families who are living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and we are the only organisation in the South West to provide vital hospice care to these families. Some families come to us for palliative care, some for emergency care and many for planned respite and a rare opportunity for a break away. But there’s more to it than that. We provide a loving and caring place for every member of the families who stay with us. A place where everyone can begin to forget their worries for a while, be a family again and find expert help and support in facing an uncertain future. Our services are free to the families who need us because we believe that nothing should get in the way of very sick children receiving the very best care. So, with little government funding, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to deliver our promise to ‘make the most of short and precious lives’. Children’s Hospice South West has two purpose-built hospices in the South West. Little Bridge House in North Devon and Charlton Farm in North Somerset. A third special home from home for life-limited children in Cornwall and Plymouth, is due to open in 2011 called Little Harbour.

In order to celebrate my forthcoming 50th birhday I decided to cycle from Lands End to John o' Groats to raise money for the Childrens' Hospice South West.

This is a particularly challenging test for me because I am not a 'natural cyclist'. My main sport is running so I have been regularly doing long cycle rides, cycling to work,, going to spinning classes, doing Pilates and running.

I chose the Childrens' Hospice South West because I am one of those lucky people who have children who are healthy. One of the hardest parts of the ride will be not seeing them for over two weeks! I was particularly moved by the work that they do at our local hospice at Charlton Farm and the thought that goes into every aspect of the care provided for the families that go there.

I have been particularly lucky in being able to do the ride with two very supportive friends - Anne and Lynette. In addition I have received help from many people including cycle repair advice from Brian, Les, Doug and Bill; donations of equipment from Nicky and Geoff Leeson; help with fundraising from friends and family and support with the journey from the intrepid Beakes who are accompanying us in week 2.

Thank you for visiting my page.Through Virgin Money Giving the donations will be quickly processed and passed to the Childrens' Hospice South West. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
