Practical Action
Practical Action is an international development charity, founded in 1966 by radical economist Dr EF Schumahcer. We work with and employ local people to create simple, sustainable answers to poverty. We know that the right idea, no matter how small, can change lives.

We had (amazingly) great weather for the Nightrider. Here's a picture taken as the sun rose over St Paul's at 5.25 am

I was pleased and surprised that I managed to pedal up the long hill to the finish, passing several people pushing their bikes - usually I'm the one left behind on hills. All those "training " rides in the south Shropshire hills were worth it.

So the challenges were not the ones I'd expected - lack of sleep, lack of fitness, bad weather - but instead the more familiar ones of inconsiderate driving , traffic congestion and diabolical potholes.

Plus an added one of tipsy (if friendly) people outside the pubs wandering over to chat to us as we waited for the traffic lights to turn green.

Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored me

Emma

I'm taking part in the Nightrider, a 100km night-time cycle ride round London on 9-10 June

I heard about the Nightrider last year and thought I would love to do it - but I was busy with the Shrewsbury Bike Fest, as I have been on the second weekend in June for the last 5 years.

This year everything has come together and I have the opportunity - a break from Bike Fest-  and the incentive - a chance to support Practical Action and tell people about its work.

Practical Action is  a brilliant charity. It puts into practice the ideas of E.F Schumacher the author of  "Small is beautiful - a study of economics as if people mattered". Schumacher understood that "progress" can't be about more and more consumption of material resources and that we all, rich and poor, have to learn how to develop sustainably.

An example of one of their projects is the "floating garden" - a small vegetable plot on a raft so that people in Bangladesh don't lose their produce, food and income whenever their area floods.

If you haven't heard of Practical Action please have a look at their website to find out more.

I do a lot of cycling but this is the first time I have signed up for this sort of challenge. I'm looking forward to the cycle ride as well as to raising money for Practical Action. If you would like to sponsor me I'd be very grateful. Thank you.
