Charities

The Stroke Association
The Stroke Association is a registered national charity solely concerned with stroke. We aim to reduce strokes through research and health education, and also help and support people and their families who have been affected by stroke through our Community Services.
Kith and Kids
Kith & Kids is a small charity based in London providing support to people of all ages who have learning disabilities or autism (many also have physical and sensory disabilities) and their families. People with these types of disability face social exclusion every day. It does not have to be that way and for forty years Kith & Kids has provided high quality, inclusive projects and activities to help people develop the confidence and skills to lead fulfilled and independent lives. These include volunteer supported holiday time projects, a summer respite camp, weekend clubs and friendship schemes. Kith and Kids are a valuable resource, providing information and crisis support for parents, carers and siblings from across the UK.

Life is all about challenges. However big or small we all have to face them on a daily basis. The mark of a person comes when they face and overcome a challenge that seems insurmountable. We are used to seeing people such as sportsmen stand or fall in the face of adversity, but we are less aware of the battles going on all around us.

People with learning disabilities and those who have suffered strokes are in a daily battle against odds that would overwhelm the most successful and hardened among us. In recognition of this we have set ourselves a challenge that, in some small way, might give us an idea of the difficulties they face.

We are Team Arch to ArcNick Yates, Jonny Muir, Tom Levitt and William Surman - four friends who hope to raise cash and recognition for two charities that do great work for those with learning difficulties or autism and stroke sufferers.

We aim to travel from London to Paris by foot, rowing boat and bicycle over the course of two days. We will run a distance of 100 miles in relay from London to Dover, before jumping into a four man rowing boat to cross 22 miles of The English Channel to Calais. Once we reach Calais we will all head out on our bikes and cycle 180 miles to Paris.

The aim is to complete the adventure as quickly as possible, across three or four days (if required). We are a four man team rowing a six man boat, this isn't done very often and we have a chance to break the record by completing the crossing in less than 6 hours!

It’s fairly difficult to train properly for these sorts of events and no doubt there will be times when our brains are screaming for us to stop and our bodies are fully in agreement. The point is that whatever we go through during the challenge will be as nothing compared to what faces those suffering from disability or stroke.

If you have a few spare quid please push it our way, if only so you can take full satisfaction and enjoyment from laughing at photos of us in extreme pain – that will of course be posted on the site!

We will also add them to our Twitter feed @TeamArchtoArc  and our Facebook Group Team Arch to Arc – London to Paris
