I will be running* the London Marathon for 2 reasons, which are really important to me:

  1. To raise money for Mental Health Foundation
  2. To do something positive out of experiencing something negative and, in doing so, helping to contribute to breaking down stereotypes to do with mental health and removing some of the stigma attached

*or more likely hobbling/crawling/dragging myself through the streets to the finish line

In October 2014, I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety, but in truth I had been struggling for more than a year before that. Over the past 2 or so years I have taken various medications, joined support groups, had one-to-one therapy, read a lot of books, listened to podcasts and watched documentaries in a bid to understand more about mental health and to learn how to better manage my health - both mental and physical. I have been very fortunate in that I've had incredible support from my boyfriend, friends, family, colleagues and even strangers.

So now I want to give my support.

Thank you for your sponsorship - it will give me a huge boost in my training and a huge boost to Mental Health Foundation, and to millions of others suffering from mental health illnesses who will benefit from the money donated.

And remember the following**:

  • 1 in 4 people will have a mental health illness in any given year in the UK, with mixed depression and anxiety being the most common
  • Mental health problems are the largest burden of disease in the UK - 28% of the total burden
  • Mental health research receives only 5.5% (£115 million) of the total UK health research spending
  • In the UK, it's estimated that mental health problems cost £70-100 billion a year
