MACS (Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia and Coloboma Support)
MACS (www.macs.org.uk) was formed in 1993, by a group of parents, all of whom had children with microphthalmia (small formed eyes), anophthalmia (no eyes) and coloboma (sight problems). Until then, most families had no contact with other children with these conditions, nor the opportunity to meet, support and learn from each other. MACS is helping to change all that. MACS is a Registered Charity in the UK and is run by volunteer parents with children who have the eye conditions, by young people who are directly affected and a small staff team of three. Mutual support, from people who know what you are experiencing, either as a parent or young person, is something that we passionately believe in. We have come a long way but there is still a lot more to be done to achieve better understanding of the eye conditions, to fully support those affected by these conditions, and to improve opportunities for people with Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia, Coloboma. Thanks for helping us to achieve this.

Welcome to our fundraising page.

The beautiful little lady pictured with us here is Fern, our tiny niece. Her favourite things are bubbles, rag dolls, story books and raspberries. She's frightened of Santa, a little scared of the dark and isn't keen on sleeping anywhere other than in her own bed.  She enjoys playing with all her little friends, splashing in her dog's water bowl and posting things! She is happy, healthy and content.  She also has anopthalmia, meaning she was born without her left eye.  As a result, she's been through (and will continue to require) numerous surgeries and hospital procedures.  She has shown a staggering amount of good grace and bravery in dealing with her difficulties. We are massively proud and extremely lucky to be her Auntie and Uncle.

In February we are flying to Nepal for what promises to be a rather gruelling trek to Mount Everest Base Camp.  Our plan is to trek the long (difficult!) route, walking all the way from Jiri (a small village in the Himalayan foothills).  All going well, the trek should last around 30 days and will (hopefully) take us to the Renjo La pass (5360m), Chola-La pass (5420m), Kongma-La Pass (5535m) and to Everest Base Camp (5364m).

Along the way we're are hoping to raise some much needed funds for  The Micro & Anophthalmic Children's Society.  MACS are a fantastic charity for children born without eyes or with underdeveloped eyes. They have offered my sister and her husband support, friendship and invaluable advice regarding everything from surgeries and prosthetics to raising a partially sighted child.

If anyone would like to sponsor us we'd be hugely grateful (you can do so via the link below). For those of you who know what Himalayan trekking involves, we will also take sponsorship on a per blister basis!

Wish us luck!
